Most definitely. I really don’t want to live anywhere around the Naval housing area.

My house is on the mainland, it might be a little farther than you'd want to be realistically. But it has a big garage

I’ll keep my options open. It’ll give me a good reason to ride my motorcycle to work.

I just spent a week with this new Frontier ProX as a rental. It’s pretty nice and I think I like it better than a Tacoma. The transmission and fuel mileage were impressive. Toyota needs to step up their game.

I had a 2019 or 2020 DCSB base for about 2 months last spring/summer. I wouldn't have bought the DC regardless.

Not a fair comparison to my RCLB 2WD 2.7 (which is fine with me) but I think I'd consider it if I was in the market and if it had a 4 banger. The V6 had enough power to it but was more than I need realistically.

Where are you from originally? I am from southern NH and Maine. I am 90 minutes away down here and it's seriously like a whole different world. Weather wise it's awesome. Definitely still new England with the cold in the winter but a lot better - a lot less frigid days and a lot less snow. We had a blizzard last year. Within 4-5 days I could start to see grass again. Obviously snow banks were around but whatever. I just looked yesterday and sometime mid to late February it was 45-60 degrees and I was walking the dog in the woods.

Nice! We're going this weekend for folk fest.

Yeah to this and what Rob said you most likely won't. I'm assuming BAH but I don't know you're rank. Newport is uhhhh pricey. But keep in mind it's still a bit of a typical beach town so there are some seedy areas and the winter it's slooooow. A lot of places will just be closed off season.

    "mainland" I love it.

Oh dear lord - fair warning, driving around here is terrifying. Like not the typical "masshole" jokes. RI drives way worse.

My wife's cousin lives in Newport, when I picked up my sliders in Warwick last year we spent the night with him and went out. Fun little town, good food too. I will second rob though, I grew up in Manhattan and regularly drive in Boston for work and the only drivers I remotely fear and the ones with RI plates, they don't give a single fuck lmao :anonymous:

The problem is mass knows it. They're like yeah we suck. We drive bad and aggressive. It's not the best habbit but it's kinda our thing.

RI is like nah we're god's gift to drivers everyone else sucks. We clearly aren't bad. You are.

I don't have much of a commute anymore but if I monetized a dash cam channel on YouTube just from my 15 minute commute each way I could probably retire early.

I remember you posted a video of a minivan or something whipping a left on red around you or something... that video alone could net you some YouTube spending money

 Been thinking a 5.3 or 6.0 LS in my FJ would be fun :pccoffee:

The LS is actually smaller than the 1GR-FE! There was someone who did a LS swap on his second gen Tacoma on here a few years back. My biggest obstacle is mating the stock 6 speed manual to the LS. I don't want to give up anything stock except the engine. I reached out to one of the swap adapter places to see if they can make something work.

I might go with a turbo setup once I get things sorted. Realistically, I can find a decent motor with ECU for $700-1,000. The ECU can have my FJ's VIN flashed onto it so I can pass OBD inspection. It should hopefully be a budget friendly and relatively easy swap! :notsure:

That’s just a regular Tuesday. I could not go a week driving across town without needing horn/ABS at least 5 times. It’s bananas.

Fortunately/unfortunately I am now working closer to home and don’t have really ANY commute, so no chances for constant source material

You jacked up the quote but yeah, I know there are people who will RE-FUSE to leave the island. Like born, raised, have never left. Amazon makes it easier now, but people would only buy cars from delears there and refuse to go to the mainland. Every so often you hear about someone who is like, 87 and needs to go to the hospital or something and it’s their first time ever leaving.

PS navy dude - google “Providence Waterfire”, it’s a cool shin dig. I would do it at least once while you’re here.

Also check out Newport Folk Fest, it’s this weekend this year but next year you might be able to pull it off.

    Restaurant week

    Donut tour

PVDFest (This one is actually REALLY cool)

Block Island - Get the ferry, rent a moped, then hit up ballards for very expensive drinks and a crowded beach

Train to NYC for a day it’s like 50$ round trip. Also Boston even cheaper. DC is only like 75$

Wilderness/MTB type? Check out Arcadia, Big River Management area for MTB trails. Vietnam, Swansea library trails are pretty decent too.

Camping - 3 hours gets you north into NH/VT, a few more hours into Maine. Not much down here.

Day trip to cape cod worth it. We go usually in the spring, pick a random day it’s nice out and head out there before it’s mobbed

I LOL'd at that last bit so I quoted it for future reference...

I'm going to ask though, what happened to the 1GR-FE?

I mean budget friendly compared to doing a drop in LS crate motor and transmission, getting a different transfer case, new driveshafts, etc.

The 1GR has 205k on it and is painfully anemic up here in the mountains. I'm talking 3rd gear to keep 55mph uphill anemic.

Will the stock transmission deal with an LS swap? I'd imagine you're going to end up gaining some neutrals in a hurry. Same with the rest of the drive train, although I think you're running LT so you've got some upgraded bits regardless, right?

Front axle shafts are upgraded, rear diff is pretty strong, and it is AWD full-time, so that should hopefully help relieve some of the stress (and prevent me from :burnrubber: )
