    Re the Poll:

    Gritto's Canoeing Accident

The Susquehanna River is the longest river in the US that is commercially un-navigable.
Too many rocks, too many shallows and rapids.

Northwest of Harrisburg there is an 8 mile stretch that is very popular for guided kayaking excursions.
I'm talking about the stretch between Duncannon and Marysville.
The rapids are pretty tame and not really dangerous, but it is Smallmouth Bass Heaven.
In a particularly dry year, it's possible (in late August) for a fisherman to wade across the river, a mile wide on that stretch.
You'll get swept off your feet a few times, so you better know how to swim.

    Anyway, where was I?
    Oh yeah, the canoeing accident.

It was the summer of '80 or '81.
I borrowed my buddy's aluminum canoe and went fishing with my (then) girlfriend.
    I shoulda never given her a paddle...

We were approaching a slot between 2 big rocks (almost small islands) and I told her to let me handle it.
    She didn't listen.
We ended up wedged sideways between the rocks, dumping everything in the water.
    Bye bye fishing gear.

I could touch bottom, about chest high, despite the strong current.
I threw my paddle on a rock and fished her out and threw her on there as well.
The other paddle, thankfully, was in the eddy below the rock, so I got that too.

Thank you Boy Scouts and my Mile Swim Merit Badge.
    @Squirt

    Now what? :annoyed:

I fought for, I dunno, half an hour (?) to get that canoe free.
The current held it firmly in place.
Somehow, and I don't know how, I got it loose and away I went downstream with the waterlogged canoe.
I touched bottom again and (mostly) emptied the water out of the canoe.
Then half swimming, half wading, got back to the eddy below the island.

That was enough for me, and I couldn't get back to shore fast enough.
My girlfriend found the whole thing to be very exciting.
If you know what I mean...

Only furniture I have left is my bed, my nightstand, dresser and the desk. Can’t sell the desk because it’s in the upstairs bedroom and nobody wants to carry that heavy sumbitch down. My brother and nephew carried it up. Many years ago. They said they were never touching it again. So I guess it’s included with the house.

    As to the question:

Given away (or sold) something and immediately regretted it?

    Sure, who hasn't? :notsure:

But I remember the Taurus PT-92 I sold.
This was the Brazilian military version of the Beretta 92.
I bought it before the US military adopted the Beretta and made their (to me) unnecessary changes.

The deal made was that Beretta would set up a factory to make them in Brazil with all new tooling.
Upon fulfillment of the contract, ownership of the factory went to Taurus.

Taurus has a so-so reputation in the US.

But I tell you, those early Brazilian military Taurus PT-92s were beauties.
Fit and function were superb...the finish less so, but hey...
It had the safety /decocker on the frame instead of the slide, (the main change demanded by the US Army).
And I shot it very well, better than any other handgun I've ever owned.
That fat grip fit my hand perfectly.

Man, I wish I had that one back :frusty:

AttaGritto! Great story as always. :101010:
    Talk about never touch again...
Helped a young airman move about 15 yrs ago now I reckon. Ya'll remember those huge projection TVs? He had one, getting out the bottom floor apartment was difficult, but not so painful. Getting it up the stairs at the new second story apartment took a herculean effort and plain sucked. Told him when he moved outta there, don't call ole Sgt Anderson, "period." I was told a few years later the TV died...to get it out he and a couple buddies literally threw it off the little balcony.
I never cared much for the military Beretta ... qualified with it every year, but never shot expert or got real comfortable with it. Would have liked to feel the difference in this model you describe.
