There's a way you can see if it engages even if in 2wd. But best to check in 4wd anyway.

 

How much did you get back for the cores after? Just wondering what the net out of pocket was. Thanks man.

Thanks man. Did you do the install yourself? I've watched the videos for replacing the third member on the rear and that looks pretty straight forward, but haven't watched anything for the front end yet. Wondering if that's a similar process or more involved with all the other components up front.

 

Rear end is pretty straight forward. No need to disconnect brake lines, just pull axles out enough to pull the member and re-seal. Front is a little more involved since it doesn't come with the jackshaft. So you have to swap that over and dick with the CV shafts. But nothing someone can't do in a driveway with a 12 pack and a buddy.

 

If you go to ECGS website, it will calculate the cost based on your selections and you can see how much you pay up front, and how much you will recieve once cores are returned.

 

We just did a 5.29 regear on two Tacos with front lockers. Got both finished on one day and just waited for the gasket makers to cure before filling. They both got the core setup from ECGS. Watch some vids on YouTube. It isn't bad at all. We didn't hook up the lockers yet. Just got them running. Both are past the break in period and loving it.

 

Total cost?

 

With the front locker option, it was about the same cost as the cheapest place in the extended region which would have had to include a stay and break in there or a real shitty trip home. Like $2k once the cores were returned?

The local shops were almost double that. Well worth the effort and fun to help out some friends.

 

Sorry! Memory was flaking out. With the locker option, it was about $3k after the core returns. Sorry!

Still though, much less expense to do at home with a friend or two.

 

I figured as much...I knew $2k wasn't right...that doesn't even cover the parts! lol

Regardless, We're talking $1200 for the gears, $1200 for the locker...looks like ECGS' services are about $600. Not bad at all! I will definitely go this route.

Yeah. It looks like I was remembering the cost without the locker. My bad.

 

Shop in western Colorado is wanting 5k for the parts, labor and drive it away for 5.29 gears 3rd gen tacoma.
This quote did not include a front locker. Looks like I need to take elsewhere and save a couple thousand.

 

Looking at ECGS website right now, am I missing something, it seems like for a 2nd gen with a rear locker they only offer up to 4.88?

 

The 8.0in diff has different options than the 8.75in.

 

I know nothing about diffs or gears. Trying to gather info, thank you. So the 2nd gens have an 8 inch diff and the 3rd gens have a 8.75?

 

No problem.

I do not know what the 2nd Gen has, just an assumption since the 5.29s didn't show up for you. On the 3rd Gen side, the ATs have 8.0in other than the OR / Pro. The OR / Pro and all MTs get the 8.75in diff.

2nd gen Tacos come with the 8.4" rear t100 non elocker or the 8" tv6 elocker. The 8.4" has 5.29 options where the 8" does not.
