I tried the “ECT Power on all the time” mod; this got rid of the lag but was annoying for different reasons.

Got KDmax and it now shifts like a normal vehicle. Wish I had done it sooner.

Well it didn't take long for this thread to turn into a tune commercial. Makes you wonder!

Great video. Super informative…but it made me wish I had shopped for a manual transmission :burnrubber:

If the transmission programming bothers you, you aren't alone. Most professional tunes will improve the shifting. Before you spend money though, try driving in ECT power mode and see if that helps. It will try to keep the engine closer to the power band and it doesn't like being in too high of a gear with ECT power turned on. You can also use S mode to limit the highest gear and that can reduce the bogging down from being in too high of a gear. It requires extra input from you, the driver every now and then but I find it makes me satisfied with my Tacoma without spending any money on a tune. Regearing also helps because often the truck is looking for a gear between 3rd/4th and 4th/5th. You may not want to spend that kind of money though, especially on a newer truck. I certainly don't.

Went from a 2018 with gear hunting to a 2020 without...kinda why I traded for newer. Damn near the same truck. Luck of the draw. The 2020 is almost perfect in that respect. I hear tunes do help!! I would have tried a tune on the 18 but the 20 drove so much better, doesn't need it.

Beat me to posting this video. His video series should be required watching for new (and some old) Tacoma owners.

After 5.5 years in my truck I finally did a transmission tune. I was happy with how the truck towed and handled everything I tossed at it. Little did I know how much better it could be. Totally satisfied with a good performance tune.

I should have specified…this was for my diesel tow rig.

Not trying to be a wise-guy, but I am puzzled that you have over 800 posts and have not heard of transmission reports from owners or stumbled across posts covering this topic?

Pull the seat up a bit closer. Got to stay on top of that gas pedal.

Yout brain learns the behavior of the way it drives. Like a manual you anticipate a shift. After couple reps in you get use to it. I've opt out of the tunes and completely went back to stock for MPG savings

I've had a lot of new trucks recently because I didn't know what I want. All the new stuff has a laggy trans. Nothing more disappointing than stepping on the gas and getting no torque. I get this in the Tacoma and got it in the others with way more power.

Still I think the cruise control is almost unusable for towing in the Tacoma. Terrible experience. But getting my regear soon, and hopefully this will fix it. I calculated 2500rpm shifts with old gears and 5.29

I swear my transmission can read my mind when it needs to shift. It certainly does according to the road conditions, depending on the speed, and grade. You certainly don't need a tune, unless expecting something way more from these trucks. These guys on tw will have you spending money on stuff you don't need.

The auto trans does hunt a bit, its overeager especially from 2nd to 3rd if not at least moderately accelerating which makes it have to kick back down to 2nd almost immediately then back to 3rd. You get used to it - its still the best mid size truck on the market by far. The trans doesn't clunk, I'm not worried its going to explode, etc...its fine.

mine seemed to have a lot more pep when it was new. it would spin the tires when pulling out of my neighborhood onto a high speed road. now i can floor it and it just slowly creeps up to speed. i think it learned my habits after being stuck in slow traffic so now its sluggish everywhere. i need to get one of those bidirectional scan tools so i can reset the learned values myself, amongst other things
