    So I've been watching my driver side boot on the rack and pinion . For the longest time just seemed to be a slight wet spot on boot . I have almost 165k miles on the truck now. Today I looked under to just check havent for some time and doesn't look to be a slight leak anymore sadly . I know the stealership would be the most expensive route . I've watched max powel do it on you tube . I'm short on time and do have the mechanical abilities to perform the work . Again short on time . I'm looking to be pointed in the right direction to purchase a new rack and pinion. Suggestions would be much appreciated.20220721_162525.jpg

    Based on your experience an OEM would be your best bet. It would be at least good for another 165t miles

    Yeah definitely want to replace with oem . Don't want to take a shot in the dark on a remanufactured

    I was told by the dealership at 48 months and 33k miles (when my serpentine belt failed) that my rack and pinion was shot and needed to be replaced. Quote from dealership = $3,100. I still have not replaced it and I'm on month 64. I see this same repair in my near future... :(

    I know if I do it myself I'll save a good chunk of $$$$$$. On the other hand it's a huge pain in the azz to do the job efficiently. More special tools to buy that I hope to never use again . I'm doing my homework to see where prices for parts and labor run. I see racks go from $500 to $800ish for new and super cheap for remans . Which I'm not going the cheap route . I havent been feeding it power steering fluid so it's not that bad yet .

    If you’ve got a local independent shop you trust, I’m sure they’ll install an OEM rack,, that’s about your only other option, unless you find a guy in a local club that likes wrenchin’.

    Yeah I do have a buddy that's a mechanic. I've considered having him take a look and see what his methods will be . Correct me if I'm wrong ,but doesn't the dealership want to remove the motor to replace the rack and pinion?

    They suck ass to do.

    Step 1. Remove front diff.
    Step 2. Remove AC compressor (just out of the way)
    Step 3 Remove rack. Pray the slip joint isn't seized.

    Reverse and align.

    Yours isn't that bad. I wouldnt personally change it, but i would check on it and be ready to replace it.

    Far as I seen and read yes for sure a pain . I understand it's not that bad ,yet. If I were to buy a brand new rack not sure where the best place is to go to other than stealership. Don't know what to trust online .
