Honest question here, what do you want to happen? Say the dealer tells you there is nothing they can find causing the noise. Will you accept that and move on or keep taking it back?

Yes. Hoping it just something stupid and a quick fix. The ones I checked out did not make the knocking sound either. I wish some of the people that claim their 3rd gen 2.7 make the same sound would post multi angle videos.

With a written explanation of why it makes that sound. I want it in writing with a receipt from the Toyota and the dealership, so if an issue comes up later I'm covered. It may sound crazy to want that, but if they believe it is normal and nothing is wrong, then they can back it up in writing with receipt.

    A. he has a warranty that will cover a major issue
    B. When it comes to the engine and how its performing its monitored and will throw a code if something become off enough.
    C. dealerships are less obligated to help you when you throw out lemon law on your first visit.

Why don't you trace the sound source? Just get a short section of hose, hold it to your ear and move it around the engine. Start on one side...then move to another...and go around the oil pan. Its not hard to do.

The truck or my brain :)

Well when I turn off the truck and turn it on the sound is gone and comes back once the idle drops or after about a minute or if I rev it up right after starting. It never goes away when it is running.

I have done it before, but this is on Toyota. Prove it is normal or fix it. Let me go into the dealership start and run at least 2 new 2.7 trucks of my random choosing with witnesses and if they make that sound Toyota can give me a receipt claiming it is normal. Do not even have to move them, so there will be no miles added to the trucks. It really is that simple :)

I think you meant “inclined” rather than “obligated” in (C). What the dealership is obligated to do doesn’t change based on customer behavior…unless of course the customer behaves criminally. I think what you’re getting at is the old “you catch more flies with honey than lemonade” adage which is true, but only to a point. Sometimes a dealership is not inclined to be helpful because they prefer non warranty work to warranty work and easy to diagnose issues to hard to diagnose issues.

Less obligate but still required by law. Like I said before. Manufacture direct to customer sales and service is the solution. The day of the dealership has to come to and end. I say remove the protections they receive and let the customer decide what is best. If dealerships are so great, then they should have no problem competing in a true free market without the legal protections they receive.

They may never find "why" it makes the sound. Just that it does. And if they can prove that the engine making that sound does not affect the performance or longevity of the engine, then you are up shit creek. Toyota doesn't owe you an engine that doesn't make noise...they owe you a reliable engine with a factory 5yr, 60,000 mile warranty. If the engine blows up tomorrow or at 49,999 miles, they will replace it with a new one. If you choose to buy an extended warranty due to this noise, then you are covered for up to another 60,000 miles. Or risk it. Your call. But they will not lemon out a truck because it "doesn't sound right to you". Sorry bud.

I think the issue is not wanting to do warranty work with a hard to diagnose issue. From what I have been reading, it looks like most dealership techs prefer the gravy train work vs the warranty work. I did nothing wrong, even left after they just left me there and then I went and called Toyota. They could not even be bother to let me hear one of the new 2.7 trucks on the lot. See, they know if their trucks do not make the noise, then they cannot pass the buck right back to me :)

You didn't have an appointment...they told you to make an appointment to properly diagnose your truck and you refused to do that while you were at the dealer. You were wrong in not making the appointment. Stop saying you didn't do anything wrong because you did. Why would anyone waste their time letting you hear another engine? What do you gain from that? Make your appointment like everyone (including the guy inspecting your truck) told you to do and if they say it is normal...in writing...then you are covered. Listening to another truck will get you nowhere in getting yours fixed.

I've lived it brother. I had a lemon. I went through the process. But tell you what...if they lemon out your truck only because you don't like the way it sounds and there is actually nothing wrong found during the inspection, I will mail you a fruitcake this year for Christmas. And who doesn't like fruitcake?!

I cannot be forced to make an appointment and did not force them to do anything, I called them out on lies, especially saying they had no 2.7 trucks. They walked off and left me there and the advisor manager told me to go trade it in or sell it. Soon as I left, I called Toyota. Listening to another truck at their lot would have solve everything. You clearly have no clue what listen to another truck would have solved, it would have been over and a thank you from me and I would have moved on :)
