It’s a valid concern that I’ve been going back and forth on for a few weeks. I love my truck and Toyota has really disappointed me, the thing is they all suck sometimes, and I’m not going to give them $.
My plan at this point is to stay in contact with extended warranty folks and the shop to make sure I’m clear on the options and In the end I’ll probably keep it. Love the truck, and Toyota doesn’t deserve me right now though.

if I was the one in a million, then round two should have pretty good chAnces haha

Thought about the Nissan truck with the Cummins, but haven’t found anyone that owns one to ask. Heard they don’t hold value very well also.

I have no confidence in the techs that work at the dealerships that have difficulty performing an oil change or removing skid plates without breaking something to rebuild an engine. I would trade that truck in immediately.

I don’t know anyone with the Cummins either. I don’t worry about resale value. If I like the vehicle I plan on keeping it a long time until it’s not worth much anyways.

What was the experience that left you so disillusioned with Toyota techs?

It is. If he gets a good tech that cares about quality over speed, he may be ok, but if he gets a clown tech with a focus on speed over quality, then it will be issue after issue.

They are not Toyota techs. They are Toyota certified dealership techs. You be surprised how many techs go from dealership to dealership across different brands, just like sales people. Yea, some of them are awesome and do great work, but a good percentage of them are clowns and focus on speed piece work.

Lol. Service centers break stuff, damage vehicles all the time. Some of them will try to pass the cost to the owner, even when it is their doing.

He is already without a vehicle. He may be able to get good money for it and hold out to the market goes back to normal. If he needs a vehicle, then that is another problem and he may have to stick with it, but if and when the market comes back he could and most likely will lose thousands in value and be stuck with a truck that could have multiple problems down the road and cost him thousand out of pocket in repairs.

The low miles has nothing to do with it, more the type of repair and the tech doing the repair. The miles. Just make it easy to sell for a good price, especially in this market.

Funny. Comments like this, is just one of many reasons people do not like dealerships. Always passing the buck. How about manufactures start cracking down on dealerships that scam customers and pass the buck around. Or better yet, do away with dealerships and their lobbying all together and go customer direct. Go look at the statistics on dealerships and what customers think. It is insane the dated dealerships are still around and what they get away with.

Maybe best to avoid dealerships all together for non warranty work :)

It’s interesting that you regard my statement as “passing the buck”.

I do agree with your last sentence, I wouldn’t bring a vehicle to a dealership unless there was warranty work involved.

I have worked for many different types of shops: dealerships, National used car chain, independent facilities- they all have one thing in common: some techs are rad and some suck.

It’s simply a part of living - there are risks involved. If you want to avoid any and all risk don’t buy a vehicle.

In my anecdotal experience, dealerships are different all across the board as I have owned Ford's, Subaru's, Toyota's, Honda's, Chevrolet's, VW's, etc. To me, you have to shop around for service just like you do for a vehicle. I found outstanding (I mean standup) Subaru, Toyota and Acura dealerships near me. My local Honda dealership is a complete nightmare. I had small issues before with the vehicles where maybe they forgot the oil change sticker another time there's grease/oil stains on headliner that I had to scrub off, one time they didn't tighten down the oil drain plug completely (it was weeping not dripping and I did maybe like a 1/4 or 1/2 of a turn to stop it) or door handle or steering wheel was covered in grease, or the seats were filthy with grease, etc. It always screams of a lack of attention to detail. Anyway, the last straw was when I took one of my Honda's in for a simple oil change and brake job. I had to rent a car so I dropped the vehicle off at 7:30 AM, came back at 6:00 PM, paid the bill, backed the car up and I could tell they didn't do the brakes. I hopped out, looked at the pads (they were not changed) then I checked the dipstick and the oil was still black so they didn't do ANYTHING! I drove it right back in and said "nothing was done" and got "well that can't be. . ." they checked it themselves and I heard "zOMG, this has nevar happened before, blah, blah, blah" I said "I understand can you please just do the work and call me when it's done?" Honestly, I was disappointed and kinda pissed off but I wasn't angry or super pissed off just mostly irritated that I had to come back. What irked me is that I had to rent a car and I had already returned the rental car and by this time the rental car place was closed so that sucked. They gave me a ride home and I know that shit happens and we all make mistakes so, again, I didn't go off or anything, I just asked that he (the service writer) personally make sure the work is completed before he calls me again to pick the car up.

Anyway, next day someone called and said it was ready but when I arrived I did not get an explanation, nor an apology nor a discount, nothing, like it was totally normal and nothing unusual happened. THAT pissed me off more than anything that they wouldn't even acknowledge their mistake the next day. The same service writer just smiled, gave me my keys and bill and said "okay, she's all ready, just go pay the cashier over there. . . have a great day." I understand being embarrassed, again as I said earlier, mistakes happen, God knows I make plenty of mistakes but I own up to them, apologize and make it right. Anyway, so that was the LAST time I ever went to that dealership. I take my Honda's to the Acura dealership (a mile or two south) and that dealership is amazing. It's the same price for oil changes, tire rotations, etc. as the Honda dealership but I get a complimentary Acura loaner and the work is perfect every single time as I've been going there for years now. However, because of the factory warranty and my poor record keeping, I take all my cars to the dealership for ALL service while they are still within the warranty just for proof/evidence of manufacturers recommended service compliance and just in case of a disaster I would hopefully have the records for proof and the head service writer to vouch for me. What pisses me off at the dealership is when I get skippy the new guy that doesn't tighten down the oil drain plug or there's grease everywhere on the exterior or interior or just sloppy work in general and, again, this is generally at the Honda dealership. I figure you're paying top dollar then it's only natural to expect top dollar service. At my local Toyota dealership for example, it's my benchmark because I mean I've been going there since the mid 90's and it's perfect, competent, professional, honest service each and every single time.

I also use independent shops for when my cars get older, out of warranty, higher mileage but, again, it's the exact same thing. Most independents are awesome, sometimes you get a stinker. The thing is, with a small independent shop, I feel like the turnover is much less and (in my experience) there is "generally speaking" a sweet spot or perfect mix consisting of accountability, honesty, talent and affordability. Many times, if there's a job they cannot handle or have no experience/talent to handle that specific job, they'll let you know up front and many times refer you to a shop that can handle that job.

I literally drive my new vehicles like I stole them during the warranty period. I figure if they don't blow up then it will be good for the long haul.

It’s not just Toyota. A pretty big percentage of techs at dealerships are hacks. I do all my own work unless it’s warranty.

Yeah, that part does not fit the statement, not the best response. I just think it's time to remove dealership protections and let the consumer (Free Market) decide. Go look up the what dealership groups have done and are doing to Tesla. It's disgusting.

The explains why the coolant was "boiling" but your temp gauge wasn't pegged out. The cylinder would have been pushing all the air from the compression stroke into the water jacket through the crack, drastically increasing the pressure in the water jacket. You would see a huge amount of bubbles and steam out of the radiator from this even though the actual temp wouldn't have been much higher.
