Had a flat with a drill bit, and in case anyone is wondering, the stock bottle jack on some pads will work changing out a 33”+ tire. Ymmv

That's a good one. Working on tires for many years I have found some odd stuff in tires. Once found a staple remover and part of a stapler in the same tire.

FYI, you are using the wrong end of your spade bit... you will get a bigger hole going the other way.

That's a good one.. saw a key once, never seen a spade bit.

That's a great tech tip on the factory jack... I use the same technique with my motorhome when I need to lift it. My floor jacks won't lift it, so I have an 8 ton bottle jack with some blocks to do the job.:hattip:

You should add this photo and statement to the "Cheap/Free Mods" thread. A worthy idea to keep those blocks handy.

I tried, but Discount said it was on the contour of the sidewall and couldn’t be saved. Bummer too, my tires only had about 10k on them.

Did you try or Discount just tell you that? How about patching from the inside ?

I have a plug kit and would always try to fix it myself first, especially before buying a tire...

That is way too close to the sidewall. Especially with 4-5 inches of the bit in there it most definitely gouged the sidewall

on the trail, ARB plug kit would probably work in a jam.

Exactly right. Way too close to sidewall.

Yes, I would reluctantly agree. I did post that remark about plugging it "tongue in cheek". I have plugged tires before though, with objects penetrating that close to the sidewall, on the outer edge of the tread with no issues. The particular injury that your tire sustained would give me pause regarding a plug however.

It may be " close to the sidewall " but still in the tread. Fix or don't fix it your choice. Doesn't hurt to err on the side of caution.

Jack pads? Scrap pieces of 2"X8" 8" or 10" long...

Are you implying the stock jack can’t be used to change a 33” tire without the pads?

I have yet to change a tire with it (I have a floor jack in the garage), but I have used it to get unstuck. I’ve generally assumed it would work fine to change one of my 33” tires in an emergency. I think @JoeCOVA has shown that you can change a 35” with it.

not implying anything, merely showing what I used and my set up. Have you actually changed a 33”+ out on a trail? How do you think the base of the oem bottle jack will hold up in dirt?

It’s a Stromung high clearance exhaust. What’s going on? It’s providing extra clearance for my 33” spare, and sounds awesome.

It doesn’t even look like it has an opening on the end

It dumps towards the front ?

No, but I used it to get unstuck when high centered on a muddy hill where I had to dig a trench with what natural tools i could find. Your pic is on pavement. Dick waving aside, I’m still curious if you tried without the pad and did not succeed. :)

no, I haven’t. But I’m glad that I have pads to assist if need be. What’s the old adage? Better safe than ____?

but if they’re not to your liking, you could always go out and purchase a $500 pro eagle or mount a hi lift jack somewhere on your hood. That’s what the jeep bro’s like to do at least. Ymmv
