They are your friend when you are hoping for approval to buy that new truck!!!
But after your first payment cycle you don't HAVE to ever borrow money from a bank for a vehicle again if you keep making payments to yourself for one more cycle.

when shopping for a tacoma, I found a lot of that resale value on the 2 year old tacoma wasn't necessarily value. It was what people owed. They needed 28k to get out from under their 2008 tacoma. So why is the guy down the street looking at craigslist going to sell his for 17k when there's a bunch out there for crazy money. Out here they are terribly popular though (9 on my block), and people love to haggle out here (fillipinos and japanese) so the asking price is always crazy, no one knows what they actually sell for.

It was the same when I sold my mini. They were terribly popular for a time, people got that "all I need is this car, I don't need food or cable" and then were selling them when the new wore off for what they owed crazy, but it worked out for me.

Dammm I hope your term is 0/36 months....

even at that it will be hard to write that check on a 2 year old truck..$700 likely seems "worth it" the first few months,,new truck and all.

That $400 "new car payment is going to suck on your four year old truck in 4 years with 3 to go......

Why would you do that to yourself..... 7 years worth of payments. I cannot imaging making a $400 payment on a 6 year old truck with even one year to go. I gues around year 4 one resolved to themselves they have a $400 apyment may as well buy a new on for the same payment and pay......$100,000 over the next 20 years of driving....IF the payment and interest doesn't go up.....Dammmmm Some people don't spend $30,000 on vehicles in 20 years.

You can't talk people out of it. "23" probably says it all.

When I was a youngin' in the air force, Kids were getting 9000-15000 (expensive at the time) dollar cars on 25% interest over 4 years (longest you could go) making payments of about 2/3 of their base pay. Imagine. Couldn't talk em out of it till about 3 months later.
Many many just turned them in and took the hit on the credit.

Some learn, some don't. Sucks for something like that though so long to be learning that lesson. Paying $34k for a $19k car. 30 minutes at the dealership.. 84 months of staring at that rolling reminder of that day. Easier to get off heroine than out of that thing.

You got to put it in perspective with income.

Like I said, I threw mine up for a 24 month loan for a couple months before I paid it off (interest was so low, paying it was "smarter" but I didn't).

Not to brag, but, 700 dollar car payment is not a problem for me to swing, won't even keep me from picking up a new moto or new car for the wife or both. Mine was about $1100. Just wanted to keep my money in my account earning about 1.35% more than the interest on the truck.

The whole idea of this thread shows that no one even knows what a car payment is.
THe less you pay the more you pay. There's no magic to those dealer numbers. "we can get your payment down to 352" means you're getting less or paying more. If they have to give you a "deal" or rebates to get you able to get financed, you can't afford the car. If they keep asking you to put down some larger amount, its because its out of your reach. Just wait, or get something cheaper.

Income perspective only counts when it makes a dent in someone's budget. Otherwise its just easier to just pay for it and drive
When I buy something I want the title or deed in my possession. Payment affordability doesn't enter the picture.. If earning $600 before taxes on $30K at 1.4% over three years makes that much of a difference in my life I might jump through those hoops and let the bank hold the paper and get "free" bread and milk for three years. It's not worth licking the stamps for me. I am pretty frugal but not to that extent. LOL

Yes you are learning...An 09 with that long a obligation will be a learning experience. The challenge will be paying on it when you are fixing it and maybe not "loving" it so much then and having the discipline to follow the obligation through and avoid it again.

I bought mine 3 days ago. I pay $520/mo but can afford $800 or so and will probably do that.

I am a wireless tech who uses his personal vehicle for work. my company pays me the IRS rate $.51/mi for business travel which amounts to about $15k/yr just for business use on my vehicle.

I didn't have the option like most to drive a beater to work every day and just save up money to pay cash. I needed something reliable thats going to run forever so thats why I got my taco.

Its just a 4x2 access cab with the 4-banger hauling tools and test equipment around to cell towers. I drive almost 45kmi per year so gas mileage is huge. The idea is to own it clear around the 100k mile mark and reach the net-zero mark around 130k. I love my TACOMA!!!

    Just give it some time
After seeing some of these prices, I can see why mine is so high. I got an '06 for $389 a month. I should also state that I have terrible credit. Now, I'm not feeling so bad.
