True story:

When I was very young, my best friend at the time moved to Atlanta and my parents let me go to visit her and sent me in the car with another couple they knew to drive down there who happened to be going as well. We were somewhere in Virginia when I start asking that question. They guy driving told me to look out the window and see the little green sticks coming up out of the ground. Those are mile markers. "How high can you count miss mollie?" "Really high!" "Great! When we pass 1,000 more of those, we'll be there. So if you start counting now, it will help!"

Definitely wasn't 1,000 more miles, but I swear that worked. I shut up and counted for the next like 10 hours waiting eagerly for each mile that we passed to make sure I didn't miss one.

That’s how I pass the time driving the long boring Northeast Extension of the turnpike. I count them off by 10ths if a mile, out loud in the voice of Sesame Street’s “The Count”. Gotta do what works for ya.
