I have an old Crapsman chipper shredder and tried using that to shred my corn the first year. Darn thing kept clogging up at the exit chute. I gave up on it and only use the Honda mower now. Works like a charm. Only drawback is getting some blowback, but gardening is meant for getting messy. Playing in the dirt is what it's all about!

I wonder if cutting a hole on opposite side would help? All i have is a riding mower but if i hit one it vaporizes it

Not sure. The chipper shredder does a great job on sticks and small branches, which is what it's designed to do.
A riding mower will definitely tear up corn stalks if it doesn't push them down first. I just found that using the riding mower left a lot of unmowed stalks and stumps.

The Chippewa five has a flail if you use the top chute and a branch feed hole on the side not shown. The flail would probably clog if I fed corn stalks in there. I got it for $20 with a bad clutch and eventually found parts to repair it. Still needs a little assistance starting but once it does… she purrs through almost anything that fits in the branch feed hole. Like all old tools it’s lacking some serious safety features. Like I could easily shove my hand and arm into the flail loading leaves.

We might have to build some fences to keep the yard bunny out of the beds.

Does anyone know why my broccoli will just grow bigger and bigger, but I never get an actual head of broccoli? Last year the same thing happened. Right now the biggest plant is about 2 feet tall. According to the seed packet, this year's crop should have been ready for harvest mid-June. I got nothing but giant leaves and stems.

Too much nitrogen not enough phosphorus.

    Planted too late.

Funky variety not liking your day cycle.

    What area? What variety?

Broccoli is usually a cool weather plant. We are zone 9 here and plant it in September.

Northeast MA, They are De Cicco. Package says 48 days to harvest. I have no idea what's in the soil, I just kinda wing it. They are in a raised bed I just built this year. Fresh store bought soil with some kitchen scrap compost mixed in. The corn and squash both seem to love it. I occasionally use some water soluble plant food.

We have late frosts here sometimes. I planted them end of April. They should have been ready before summer really kicked in.

Damn, I guess it really could be a bunch of different things. I thought broccoli was going to be easy.

We had a mild winter, with some warm spells. This can cause the broccoli to bolt which will then lead to large leaves and with very little heading. Broccoli like cool to cold weather. Warm weather can also cause bitterness in the florets.
