does not matter if the van was turning illegal... it is the motorcyclists responsibility for his own safety and speeding between the lanes is NOT SAFE (he should have went a lot slower if at all)... it was 150% avoidable by not lane splitting at fast speeds...regardless if it is legal or not lane splitting is risky.

    yes I do ride

true that, when it comes to riding a motorcycle, the legalities don't mean shit when your limbs are scattered all over the road.
Take care of yourself, no matter what you have to do!

I really don't have a problem with lane splitting if done at a reasonable speed for the traffic conditions... is this guy an idiot... I'm sure he's seen these videos and probably even seen cars do this exact same thing in real life... so it would be obvious to go slow... real slow... maybe not stop, but slow and prudent.

The problem is that people ride aggressive because they think they are hot shit on a bike... people should drive assertive not aggressive. Aggressive riders are negligent, careless, and get hurt. Assertive riders pay attention, know the rules, ride smart, and take responsibility for their own safety.

it's also a pretty easy concept to grasp, if you are lane splitting, if you come up to a situation where there is room for a vehicle to move over, be aware, and slow down as you pass them.
on that road all the other cars were side by side, when the rider noticed the opening in traffic, he should have taken note, and been ready for anything.

i am still recovering from an accident in 07. cracked sternum, 3 broken ribs and 2 ruptured discs. just had surgery 2 weeks ago to repair the discs.

not afraid of the bike or of riding, but more of a healthy respect.

I'll be getting my 2nd bike, I used to have an 07 honda shadow 750, but I hated the riding style.

I went for a ride one day, I admit I was in the wrong state of mind, I was mad and shouldn't have been riding. I was going down a twisty road, cars in front of me and behind, and I messed up on a left hand corner, and basically just rode off the road into the ditch.

I was furious at myself, and knew I needed to get rid of that bike, riding a cruiser was like trying to steer a couch!

I've ridden dirt bike's a lot, and I'm sure on a sport bike I will feel right at home.

definitely thought about it, but I'm more interested in a sport bike, and I don't want to loose money on buying something and then regretting it like I did with the shadow.

the 650R is a good bike because it has the sport bike look but has the more upright posture of a dual sport which is heaven on your back for longer rides... the bike has a lot of usable low end torque for commuting and riding around town unlike high reving sport bikes. If you want something bigger kawi has a Ninja 1000R which also has an upright posture.

Safety is all up to the rider... be alert, cautious, and patient and you'll stay relatively unscathed

what year did they start making them?

I will dump the bike, I'm sure of it, so I am only planning on spending 3-4 grand.

on that topic, how much would say a 2002 cbr 600 go for in the usa?

You're doing it wrong. I took a road king to a motorcycle course. No problem.

THe guy that ran the course here last time could put my buell to shame doing figure 8s on his stratoliner across 4 parking spaces. Said he could do it in 2 if he was on my bike. No problem. I was a bit of a pussy because it was brand new and the parking lot is a bit crumbly.
Take a course. You're just not secure on the bike. Need some schoolin.
GET on a sport bike and you'll do the same thing. Its not the bike. Grinding floor boards is awesome. They may be long but they have a very low center of gravity and nice round tires. Corner like mad... not the best radius due to dragging parts is all. SPort bikes don't do great till you get on your side, where if you're having trouble sitting down into a bike, leaning over 45 degrees isn't going to be what you're into either. I'll keep up with amateurs on sport bikes all day on anything. Provided we don't get into a drag race.
Super motard.. Man that DRZ400sm Fucken EH.. that thing. Holy shit. Yea. That was a blast. Like owning an amusement park, till your ass wears out. I would love the city to empty some day when I was sitting on a drz400sm. A bit overpriced and under technologied in my opinion for the price. But I did get my hands on one for about 6 months once.

If you like the 650r check out the versys. same engine.. similar price tag. Taller. Taller is great for traffic. Both of em are pretty ugly by honda/yamaha standards. But hopefully its the style that keeps the price down a bit, not the quality. Though I can say, though I like my KLR, the second yamaha comes out with a good dual sport, I'm jumping on that. My kawasaki's have been the crummier of the bikes i've owned. But also the ones I've owned the longest.
