That was right after you pulled it? Looks like it had been wet before.

Dealer told me the same the diff had to come out. I bought a new actuator and had it installed by a local mechanic for $300 labor. Diff did not come out. He had a lift that made it easier to deal with getting the old one out and new one in. He did say it was really tight but with some patience he got done.

That was 2 days after going across the stream. Never saw water before that crossing. I was shocked how bad it did look.

The same exact thing happened to me. Water got into the ADD and it shorted out. They replaced it under warranty and told me they would not do it for free again. Then they tried to explain how the system is water proof but you can’t submerged it.

It seems that the ADD is a week point in the system.

Yikes. Yours was really bad. Mine wasn't that bad but still failed. The sucky part was, I was on a trip during winter and woke up to a bunch of snow and I was stuck. Had to dig the truck out.

That doesn't look half as bad as mine! I was on a trip up near Bishop in July 2019.

My failure happened instantly. As soon as I crossed the water, the system failed. It's the little contact on the motor that failed. In the 2nd picture you can see it. $40,000 truck and this happens.

Mine continued to work for the day out on the trail. When we got back to the pavement aired up and switched to 2 wheel drive and got the flashing green light right away.

The ADD is on the front diff. I'm thinking of pulling mine out and filling it with some dialethic grease. I don't know if that would be okay to do or not though.

Seems like Toyota is looking into this a bit more, T-TT-0684-22 dated March 17, 2022.

    CONDITION
Water intrusion to the ADD actuator is currently being investigated as a cause of 4WD inoperative
complaints. P17A0 and P17A4 DTCs may set for this condition but not always.

    RECOMMENDATIONS
Please create a TAS case and contact TAS for instruction prior to diagnosing or repairing of the
vehicle. If it is a weekend or a holiday, continue with diagnosis and repair. Please save all parts and/or
details and contact TAS on the next available workday.

Good find... So weird (why 2018 and up)...
and why would the dealer need to contact TAS for help, with techstream its basically instantly obvious of the the defect.

So no indication that a redesign, just help diagnosing I guess

Any grease you apply there will be indirectly exposed to gear oil. Is that good or bad, dont know, but I expect it probably will only be marginally effective.

Would Techstream show the the ADD is bad, or is visual inspection of the ADD needed?

I'm trying to understand why it would take a "master tech" 2 days/5+ hours to diagnose the ADD is bad, even though I initially suggested this would be the issue. Any ideas?

I'm assuming the save all parts and contact TAS is them investigating failures to determine a cause, first step toward fix I would hope.

Not that reading a forum with years of that cause already identified, but I'm sure they have a process they gotta follow.

Edit: that or they are tired of warranting parts and want to start charging if it's from off-roading.

It shouldn't take them 2 days or 5 hours for the typical issues. It's possible that it's an odd failure, but basically if it's a normal failure, then the failure record in techstream points directly to the front or rear actuator.

At that point, any diagnosis is just a waste of time, and if it's an intermittent failure may end up with replacing stuff that isn't bad.
