Just got an email notice from carfax showing its time for rotating my tires. It list the toyota dealer's phone# to make an appointment. I guess they go by calculated mileage. My odo shows nearly spot on to what they post.

Good luck on the exit strategy. My boss and I had a conference about my exit back, in May she worked the whole ego thing an I committed to 3 more years. I dont know if I will make it, need 1 1/2 to get full bennies, but the supply chain stuff is bringing out mass stupidity and I am tired of dealing with it. I'll stay 3 more or until I wig out I guess.

Do whatever makes you feel comfortable for your Tacoma. Bought my '22 sport with 6 miles on it. Changed its oil at 1,100 miles to get the break in oil out and full synthetic oil in with a magnetic drain bolt. Will be doing 5k oil change intervals now.

Ego thing? Who had the ego? You?

You mention Supply...and I happen to be a Logistics Guy during my 25yr military career.

I feel great supporting the mission...given training, MHE, PPE, Inventory Mgt System, and Outstanding Competent Leadership and I'll be sad when I have to leave.

Adopting a system and forcing it to work makes for planning an exit strategy after 37 altogether years of Logistics.

I was at the wig out moment last weekend. But, I don't want to leave the people I've supported the last 4 years in the lurch.
    ***************************************************************************************************

I'm looking forward to doing my own oil change on base soon. I have new stuff to install and products to use for a cleaner oil change.

Yes, my ego. She played me like a fiddle. LOL

Been in sales my whole life, moved to a management role 4 years ago. Now a purchasing manager working from home. I've known most of the manufactures reps I deal with for years since I dealt with, worked with and competed against them on the sales end for 40 years. We are a small multi location welding and gases supplier who has doubled our biz in the last 4 years, at the start of the growth I was asked to develop relationships with our vendors because we really didnt have one going in to my tenure. Been a hard 4 years, cut inventory levels drastically, cut about half our vendors loose to leverage our purchasing power for better prices and terms and reigned in store managers who had up until I took the job free reign to do as they wish. The boss has had my back at every turn, she has occasionally said what are you doing???? I explain my actions and in every case she says, I trust you, do what you think we need to do. I consider her a friend and have complete freedom to speak freely as she does with me. I really dont want to leave her without some plan of succession in place so I am working with one of our young store managers as my back up/assistant. He is smarter than I will ever be, just doesnt have the life's experience I have, is a little hot tempered but he will likely be running the company one day if he sticks (25 now).

There are very few things as satisfying to me as working with some young person who is sharp, wants to learn, asks questions and understands cause and effect. I enjoy the job, but I am getting tired.

These threads always are clearly divided between the 10k guys and the 4-5k guys with one or two of those 15k weirdos tossed in. I wonder when they say it still has some life left what that actually means. Is it lubricating at 75% it’s original capacity? 60%? If they had to put a number to it I wonder what it would be and what people would really be comfortable with. I also think it’s interesting that if you where buying a used truck and had two identical ones side by side the only difference being one had 5k oci and the other 10 that 100% of the people would choose the 5k because why wouldn’t you yet they say it’s a waste of time and money to do that.

I sort of rely on mobil's test lab data when they put their mobil 1 synthetics through the ringer on vehicles they use. Mobil1 has been shown to cause basically no engine wear for well over 200k miles using the engine manufactures oil change recommendations. Imo, 5k, or a year is fine for severe use...like towing, or on mostly dirt roads. 10k miles, or a year for anyone else.

Maybe determine what worn out oil really is?

It would depend on how the identical trucks were used. City drivers, fleet trucks that idle for extended periods or heavy haulers, 5k oil changes, highway runners, 10k is fine. It to me is like saying 2 identical trucks, one who has never had the radiator flushed and one the radiator was flushed monthly. Like oil changes at 5k, it doesnt hurt to flush monthly, but I see no appreciable value in it. I certainly would not pay more for a 5K OCI truck.

The question itself seems to bring to light that for some a 10K change is a unfathomable, well known sin.

The oil test companies probably measure how much of the ad pack is left, as well as contaminants present, to determine when the oil is "used up".

When you start getting sidefumbling on your lunar wainshaft, or chattering from your Milford Trunions, you’ll know then your oil change interval was waaaaay too long.

Honestly, this is a bit of a subjective arena depending on how you want to approach it.

I hear from a lot of Toyota Master Diag techs, just do 5k and call it a day.

I think dealers saying you can go 10k is excessive, assuming you're using OEM oil or Mobile1.
DI engines I'm told dirty the oil faster, and if you do a lot of short trips even with super quality oil...I'd probably lean towards 5k-ish oil change interval.

My oil personally never really gets dirty, as most of what I do is highway miles atm and frankly I'm hitting the time intervals before the mileage.

    Just my 2 cents.
