Gun Control

First of all I would like to point out that Canada has not used FACs for years. To own, and purchase firearms you need a PAL (Possession and Acquisition License). These come in two varieties restricted PALs and unrestricted PALs. A restricted PAL allows the owner to own Handguns, and other firearms deemed as "bad" by previous Liberal governments. Although we have had a registration system in place for handguns since the 40's we recently had a long gun registry system put in place, which requires us to register everything from shotguns to bolt action .22s.
Although the government that put it in place swore up and down that this was not a pre-cursor to a ban of all firearms, that same party has recently stated it's intention to ban all semi-automatic firearms restricted or otherwise. And they have a handy database at their finger tips to help them with this process.
Proponents of gun control need to look no further then the UK for the biggest example of the complete and utter failure of gun control. Gun crimes in the UK have gone up astronomically since they banned pretty well all firearm ownership. When you ban private ownership of firearms the only people who have them are criminals. One thing that people don't seem to understand is criminals by definition don't follow laws.
In Canada we have seen our firearm privileges slowly eroded by politician's feel good solutions to complex problems. I have no doubt that in the next decade all private firearm ownership in Canada will come to an end, and once that has occurred, politicians will move onto knives and any other tools they can blame for violent human behavior.
American's have a significant advantage over us in that they have the right to keep and bear arms enshrined in their constitution. I would urge you to be vigilant when it comes to protecting this right. Once it's gone it's gone for good.

 

Gun crimes in the UK did indeed jump up the first few years after the ban. However they have leveled off and are on the decline. The number of homicides committed with firearms has remained between a range of 46 and 97 for the past decade, standing at 50 in 2005/06 (a fall from 75 the previous year). I would say the Uk is a great example of gun control working, the police don't even need to carry guns. Im sorry OxyMaroon if I have made condescending statements, I did not intend to insult you or your country, I just feel that handguns should serve no purpose in this world other then in the hands of LEO's and military. Its obvious that they do serve a purpose to some people. We are facing a much larger problem then gun control today, and I know guns have nothing to do with it. I just hate turning on the tv and hearing about another school shooting, or X number people gunned down somewhere. It doesn't matter to me if its in Canada, US or Africa, we are all on this planet together, and most of those guns across the world came from the US. As for prison comparison. The US has 5% of the worlds population, and 45% of there inmates.

 

I think your facts are incorrect sonjay. Additionally the UK has found that their LEO are not adequately armed to deal with violent criminals and are in the process of arming them with Tasers.

O.K I've read this thread from start to finish and I've come to realize that maybe gun control in the U.S is a waste of time. Its too late, it's a lost cause.

Americans in general who own firearms feels that there not contributing to the problem, only helping it buy stocking up thier weapon cache with another AR-15 or a beratta 9mm.

For the last 8 years the U.S has been ran buy a goverment of war mongers who have driven thier economy in the toilet by wasting money on a war that did'nt need to be fought in the first place and one that thier losing or have basically lost. I should add the the Taliban were also trained and armed buy the U.S goverment during the cold war.

Now that your economy is decimated, violent crime on the rise, the flow of guns on the streets is increasing every day you Americans may need your guns more than ever.

F*&k it, if I was American I'd buy a RPG and a couple fully auto machine guns too.

This seems more like an attempt at trolling rather then a coherent post. The US armed the Mujahadeen, in order to defeat the communist incursion into Afghanistan and prevent the spread of Communism. This wasn't an endorsement it was simply a means to an end.
Afghanistan was a breeding ground for terrorism and I would remind you that 23 Canadians died in the destruction of the World Trade Center.
If you are referring to Iraq, I think the 5000 Kurds who were killed by mustard gas by the Sadam regime would disagree that this was a war not worth fighting.

I prefer .40 or .45.

Wars are good for economies. Over-bloated social programs with no oversight or sunset are bad for economies. (ie: fannie mae)
