Tacoma Vs. Rivian

I think that the Rivian just doesn't cut it in the looks department. Much too plain and smoothed off...guess so it can eek out those last few miles to the charger.

 

You going on theoretical. We don't have enough data about Rivian, the auto company and Rivian the auto.

haters gonna hate, but that rivian is fantastic

I would not let my tacoma go, but if the money was there I would have one of each and enjoy both at any given time

 

Somewhat theoretical, yes, but given past history of EV maintenance there is no reason it shouldn't hold true. As for operating costs, 300 miles in my Tacoma ran in the range of $90-120 whereas 300 miles in a Rivian costs $15 electricity.

I think the Rivian would be a cool looking truck if it weren't for those goofy ass headlights. They look like they were an afterthought. They designed a nice sleek and streamlined looking truck, then realized "oh shit, we might need to put some actual headlights on this thing". I've only seen one on the road; I came up behind it and it looked pretty cool, that is until I got out in front of it. Besides the front end design, I think it's a pretty impressive vehicle.

 

tacoma range sucks, and it gets worse when towing, just like everything... no??

you would have more of a leg to stand on by crying about charge times... just saying

 

Would you rather have range anxiety with an EV or gas truck? Not to mention when you get down to a low range, do you want to spend an hour to recharge or 5 min

 

Does the Rivian have rear drums?

You’re the only one crying, so it has how many charging stations nationwide? There’s that many gas stations in my city, no way it can charge at a gas station unless it’s rigged up for it.

There are enough charging stations to drive any major road to any destination in the country. You could drive all the way from Florida to Alaska and have easily available charging the entire way. Yes, it takes more planning than stopping at a gas station. Yes, the trip takes longer than in a gas powered truck. It is no way impossible though.

Considering that the majority of truck owners never tow, haul heavy loads or go offroad it is a pretty moot point. For those that do those activities an electric truck may not be ideal. Though if I had the choice of towing 100 miles roundtrip with a Rivian or a Tacoma I'd choose the Rivian every time as it is far, far better at that task.

 

my tacoma serves my towing needs and the 911 my sport car needs

I had an R1T and I sold it (bonus profit!) over my '22 TRD OR. It has no bed rail and no way to mount anything to the sides or front of the bed, the rear power outlet has no meaningful inverter and can't pull more than 1500W, the air suspension could never find it's right setting and kept "searching" when off road (and the setting doesn't stick between engine on/offs, often leaving me low to the ground when I stopped for lunch), the rear bumper departure angle isn't great and can't be improved aftermarket, no aftermarket front bumper because of the location of the frunk and no support for installation of a winch. Even ignoring all of that, none of the parts are field serviceable if you're offroad.

I think if you use your truck primarily on pavement and you have a truck because you "want a truck", the R1T is a vastly superior daily driver. If you're ever actually offroad, it's a vastly inferior vehicle. YMMV. If I were going to go this route, I think the F150L is a vastly superior vehicle from a usability perspective. I own Rivian stock, though, because it's a good product... just not for me.

EDIT: Also, range anxiety isn't really a thing. It's far enough that it's never an issue. I've had EVs for almost a decade at this point, though, but I promise it's fine.

 

Rivian looks more like a Ridgeline to me, with the one piece cab & body. Maybe more of a cross between a Ridgeline, and a new Tundra. Then some Kia inspired headlights.

The Rivian isn't terrible looking, but it's design never really spoke to me, even if it wasn't an EV, and it is. I'm not really drawn to it.

Tacoma looks better.
