What settings are people picking for the ECT button? Is the Spicy optimized for towing or just increased throttle feel?

    Thanks!

There is a new Sport/Tow mode in ECT option for OTT. Different shift logic along with throttle of your choice. The shift logic is designed to keep the truck in a higher rpm range/ready to go. Additional throttle can help for towing, but not everyone wants it and the different shifting behavior is what really helps with towing, combined with OTT’s Torque boost below 3500 rpm. The throttle choices don’t add power or torque, they just scale how far the throttle body opens relative to pedal position. Reach out to @Boltripper or your tuner if you’d like to try the Sport/tow mode. Most of my customers have been picking this new option.

There is also the option to have ECT only increase or decrease throttle sensitivity and slightly alter shift points. You can also mix and match throttle choices between D/S and ECT. Some people want an aggressive throttle like Medium for daily driving in D/S and then a lite ECT to reduce throttle to be used for crawl mode when off-roading. Throttle choices are Lite, Mild, Medium, Spicy, Super Spicy/Race. Files can be made with any combination. Lots of options with OTT.

Awesome thanks! I am going to go and see my tuner tomorrow morning, can't wait! So pretty much one could run Medium Throttle, and Sport/Tow mode for ECT? With 5.29 gears, does the best gear used for towing change? I believe with stock gears, most folks recommended staying out of the Overdrive gears. Wonder how things change with 5.29?

Owners manual states to tow in S4. You may be able to get away with S5 with 5.29’s, and upon request, you may be able to get a custom file built where ECT does Sport/Tow AND locks out 6th gear so you don’t have to go into S mode, just press ECT and go tow. Work with your tuner the OTT folks (@Boltripper and @JustDSM) and there are options.

Anyone notice a performance or MPG increase by running 93 octane, instead of 87?

And here I was concerned about putting 89 instead of 87 octane today...

    I have Med/Mild OTT 8.0 Tune and it's been a great improvement.

Is there any benefit to wiping the learned history in the ECU prior to doing the OTT8 tune? I have 8 (Mild) now and low-speed/part-throttle driveability is awful (bucking, throttle off/on), was wondering if the learned settings might contribute to this? My tuner is on an epic trip so I won't be able to get it reflashed for a couple of weeks yet, which gives me time to find an AGM battery - but when he's available, he's going to reflash.

Also, last tank of gas == more disappointment. Approx. half freeway at 65-70mph, remainder typical suburban driving. Loss of 2.5 mpg, and I track every tank manually in a spreadsheet.

Were you on another tune previously? Or tuned from stock?

Just came across an add on Craigslist for this tune saying they will be in my neck of the woods (Santa Barbara) this weekend. Tried to email reply and it got pushed back to me. Is this ad from someone on this thread?

I would take that MPG and run like hell and never look back. I think I average about 15-15.5

I think that there have been minor issues when coming over from other tunes that have overcompensated by using too much airload to try to get power. Remnants of that tune can effect how your truck learns the settings of the new tune. If it doesn't work itself out, I would recommend a reset and reflash. Your truck should not be acting the way you described.

Not sure if this is OTT related. I had this issue before the tune and was hoping the tune would fix the issue, however it is still there. Wonder if it is just ECU related.

There is a big hill near where I live, and I find that when I coast down the hill going 30ish, the truck will usually pick up speed and get to about mid 30s. With my foot off the gas and brake, I find that the truck likes to shift down to 3rd and rev the RPMs to mid 3K. Does the Tacoma like to just downshift and engine brake, instead of just coasting in 5th or 6th and improve MPGs? Anyone else experience this and have a fix?

    BTW I am on 5.29s, 33s, and mild/med OTT.

    Thanks!
    Joe

My truck will only do that while in ECT mode for (towing and hilly areas). otherwise it will either hold gear or upshift and coast.

Mine will automatically downshift if I have cruise control on while coasting downhill as it tries to slow down to maintain the set speed, but not while driving normally. Not sure what it could be.

Thank you for this, I'll get with my tuner when he's back in town and have it reset and flashed again. Hoping that smooths it out!

Just got the OTT tune from Big Dawgs tuning @NickJacq23. I had KDMax Pro, and although it was a good tune it still lacked the low end torque that our trucks need. I got the Medium/spicy option.
My truck is DCLB stock gears, 265/70/17 sl Ultraterrain tires, 2" lift, a TRD Pro "equivelent" intake and a leer 100r shell and nerf bars (for added weight).

These are my initial observations (from the first 15 miles). I will update later once I have put in a few more.

    1. Much improved low end torque. yes, I can really feel it, especially when accelerating from a stop. Just a lght normal throttle input, no heavy foot needed.

    2. Shifting is smoother and more appropriate. I noticed it will drop to around 1500+/- rpms when cruising and will shift down when you need it, and only one gear instead of two or what ever it decides, and with the lightest of throttle input(almost as if it knows). I noticed this when starting up a hill, I push just slightly on the throttle and it goes to the next lowest gear(if it needs to) and holds around 2000rpm. I think this will definitely help with fuel economy as it will go to the highest appropriate gear when cruising along. No gear hunting at all though.

    3. The throttle is far more linear and smooth than the KDMax was. I eased the pedal toward the floor, and it both revved up and shifted evenly and smoothly. No more slow, then high rev as I push on it and made it howl. No more unexpected shifts and no more uneven response from the throttle at higher rpms while pushing it.

    4. Gas mileage. I can't say anything here yet except I was surprised that it reported as high as it did for the way I test drove it. I was expecting 16-17, and got 18.5. I hope that this indicates it will get better mileage over time and normal driving. We'll see.

    5. The ECT button gives it a little more kick. Great for towing and sporting around like a kid. Honestly, other than towing, I don't think I will really use it.

Overall, I am happy with it. It improved what I already had with the KDMax Pro tune and it added torque to the low end, which has always been my main gripe about these trucks. Shifting, throttle response and gear holding improved. And... I have high hopes of better mileage for he bonus.

I can say this for anyone untuned as of yet. if you are coming from the stock tune, you will be smiling all the home and then some.

I really love that the truck does this. We have basically the same setup, 5.29s and mild med OTT. This was missing from several other tunes, I think stock did it and some of Matt’s tunes. Now that I’m in Utah, it’s super helpful!
