Got stuck for the first time - pics

Well, I've owned my 04 TRD for 3 weeks and I manged to get it stuck. I'm guessing this was really driver error and I can't blame the truck

I was travelling slowly down my future driveway which is supported by large crush, and saw an enticing dip down area off to the side. I've hit it a ton in the past, when it's been more frozen and snow filled, and it's always been just a quick fun dip to hit. Well, with 60 degree temps, and no grass on the new lot, and all that dirt being pushed around loose fill and no crush rock to give it substance, it apparently turned into a swamp-like mud pit.

The left side of the truck dipped WAY down and the tires just started spinning. Maybe I didn't carry enough momentum, but there are trees around, and the angle the truck took was a little alarming so I probably got off the gas pretty quick. Once it was dipped down on the left, the right tires (although on more solid mud/packed rock crush) didn't have enough weight to get any traction.

The truck was in 4L with the rear locker on. Moving the steering wheel around, forward, reverse...nothing seemed to help much at all. Tires are brand new Hankook Dynapro ATM. They've been awesome until now. The main part of my lot is flat mud that's 3-6" deep and it rolls through that in 4L like I'm on dry pavement.

Ended up having to call a friend with a truck to pull me out. My confidence is bruised.

Anyway, here are some pics. Should I have reasonably expected to get through/out of this on my own, or is that unreasonable given the mega mud and tilt angle (we were at 40 degrees, measured with handy iphone level app)?

 

Yup doesn't matter WHAT kind of truck you have...if you get yourself in there you'll be hard pressed to get it out alone.

We had lots of laughs AFTER I was out safely. I'm new to these trucks, but it really looke like a rollover risk if we pulled on it wrong. I was a little nervous.

 

What kind of truck pulled you out?

We all get stuck sooner or later! I should upload pics from my first stuck a month ago.

 

That's deep and thick (twss) so don't worry about it.

I'd think most stock trucks would struggle to get out of that.

 

I had my '10 for 2 days and I got it stuck just like that on a local trail network lol.

 

Don't beat yourself up to bad, that looks like a pretty gnarly ditch.
"A" for effort for atleast trying. You never know what your trucks limitations are unless you do stuff like this that's out of the ordinaire.
Glad you had someone to call though. Coulda made for a long nite.

 

That's pretty sunk down. Maybe if u were lucky and carried more momentum through it would have helped but hitting anything like that with speed would have broken something

 

Damn that mud looks thick.

 

My truck would walk that Lockers f/r or gtfo. Even with IFS if you had a front locker you'd of been fine!

 

WTF difference does it make what make model of vehicle helped pull this driver out of a mud hole!

Unless it was a Subaru Brat, Suzuki Side kick or Jeep.

What ever it was I'de glad I didn't have to pay a tow truck!

+1. Not too mention whatever pulled you out would have more than likley got stuck if they had driven in there as well.

 

I got pulled out by a late model v8 Durango. It's heavy, has decent torque, and had 4L. Honestly, I think any old thing could have gotten me out enough. I just needed to come back up out of the suction about 2' and then it hopped up and grabbed dryer mud.

On the F/R locker comment....I dunno. Like I said the angle was such that barely any weight was on the right. Even if the front right spunf hard, it wouldn't have done too much!

If like in the photo, having A-TRAC (or a front locker) and turning the front tire to get a fresh bite may have been what was needed.

Just out of curiousity, any one know the angle at which things REALLY get hairy as far as tipping over? As I said, this was at 40 degrees, but, I imagine being stuck a foot in the mud helped hold it up a bit too.
