@cowfootball, there are very few people that I know whose answer to a fairly basic question would mean anything to me. With close to a decade of EV ownership, your answer would matter to a dump ass like me.

I'm not yet sold on EV's. I'll admit that from a performance standpoint, there isn't much to not like. I realize that your EV ownership likely involves a number of vehicles but here is my concern...

I'm driving my second Tacoma. This one is a 2014 DCSB 4X4 that I've been driving for almost 9 years and it just turned 140,000 miles. Last month I gave it its annual deep detail inside/outside topside and bottom side. I just took it to the dealer I bought it from for the frame inspection and their Corrosion Resistant Compound Application. The comments I got more than once was how the truck as nice or nicer than most everything they have on their lots. The maintenance has been fluids, filters, front brakes and tires. I am able to give EVs the benefit of doubt in all functional automotive systems except for the battery technology.

Given your practicle experience with EVs in general, can you visualize driving the same EV between 100,000 to 200,000 miles over a decade or more? Can you envision the total cost of ownership of an EV still being lower than an ICE over the same time period and mileage?

 

Yota will warranty the pack on the R4P 10 years, 150k miles, so I think they expect the packs to last at least that long. As for TCO? There's been a plenty of studies (here's one by consumer reports https://advocacy.consumerreports.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/EV-Ownership-Cost-Final-Report-1.pdf ) study which shows that PHEVs and BEVs have significantly lower TCO.

 

Unfortunately, I'm the type of idiot to rotate through cars faster than most people rotate through tires and so I personally have really never thought about vehicle lifetimes that long. I currently own an XC60, a Taycan GTS and a Tacoma but I previously owned a Tesla Model X for about 4 years and I never did anything other than scheduled maintenance in it's lifetime, up to about ~70,000 miles.

EVs in general have a lot fewer moving parts and in general are cheaper to maintain than their ICE counterparts, at least early in life. You don't have a catalytic converter, no crankshafts, no pistons, no multi-speed transmission, etc. The flipside is that a battery replacement is potentially expensive late in life, causing some catch up of costs to hit you but as a lump sum which might be more difficult to swallow (even though ANL did a report that concluded that EV are 30% cheaper to maintain than an ICE over the lifetime of the vehicle, including battery replacement).

The literature I've read seems to suggest that even accounting for potential battery replacements late in life, EV have considerably lower total cost of ownership compared to ICE. Mechanically, they are incredibly simple. Electronically, maybe not so much... but a 2022 Tacoma is a whole lot more electronically complex than your 8 year old one too!

I was also offered a job by Rivian but turned it down when they pitched the job using the "im not even a car person but i love the idea of working for a company thats doing good things for the environment" i got pictures of southpark people sniffing their own farts while riding around in prius's. Im also wrong fit culturally for california hippie company.

Just FYI, I just gave my 9 1/2 year old 4Runner to my dad who is probably going to use it for another 5-10 years. If this was an electric car, the batteries would be at the end of their life.

A lot of people do not buy brand new cars, but 7-8 year old used cars because they can get by with spending $3500 on something used and then fixing it up.

A 10 year old combustion vehicle still has a lot more life than a 10 year old electric vehicle. And all those hooptie Priuses being driven around the bay area have long dead batteries.
