There have been a few times that when at freeway speed on cruise control the truck will suddenly slow down for a car in another lane. It is aggressive and not sure if it is just downshifting or actually braking. Seems like it could cause an issue for a vehicle behind me not expecting the sudden slowing for no reason. Is this normal?

Yep... the radar cruise control works fairly well for the most part, but sometimes it gets fooled or seems to 'misinterpret' the actions of the vehicle ahead.

Adaptive cruise control is awesome. (sarcasm, and not that regular is any better) Just wait until it slams on the brakes while your cruising down the highway because of a plastic bag being blown around on the road.

Exactly why I hate it. I’ve tried it in a couple of rentals, very thankful my 17 doesn’t have it.

To answer the second part of your question, your brake lights do light up when the cruise does that. Or they are supposed to.

Sometimes it gets fooled on a slight turn (or narrow lanes), that's normal. It should not be often though.

De-acceleration is also known as deceleration.

It's a computer interpreting the signals it receives via specific sensors processing through a program written by humans. I've had a few instances where the radar detected a car when there was no car, but I was cresting a hill that had a metal walk bridge slightly on the military crest, causing the radar signal to bounce back. Basically, a false positive. Shit happens. If a vehicle behind you is not prepared for you to suddenly stop, then they are a bad driver period.

It’s not just Tacoma.. my wife’s crv has the same issue. It’s an unperfected design. They will work on it and it will get better. Old cruise would run you into a wall and never slow you down.

I don't think it will do that. I use cruise control all the time when I'm on the highway and it almost never does something unexpected. Occasionally it will respond to a vehicle in a different lane but usually it's when a curve is occurring and thus you need to be aware of that issue. I usually have it set to the most sensitive setting, and thus it usually will brake a bit sooner than I would if the system is off. I like the system.

I've been a passenger in a vehicle when it happened, the facts disagree with you thoughts.

I'd be interested to know how a plastic shopping bag was enough to detect on the millimeter wave radar. Especially since the wind-blown shopping bag is the state flag of Oklahoma and I've yet to ever have the radar detect one.

Try it in an 18 wheeler when it slams on brakes at 70 mph and scares the shit out of you. then the guy behind you thinks you brake checked for no reason and points the gun at you as he goes by. The systems suck and should be banned till they make them work better.

Do you have your sensitivity adjusted to one bar, the lowest setting? Seems to help reduce this from happening in my rig.

No I have not set the De-sensitivity (inside joke) Overall I am happy with the system as I like the fact that it may have a safety factor in the event of an actual situation that would benefit from auto braking to avoid a danger. I am going to try lowering the setting to see if that helps.

Next question, what effect does the braking feature have when driving on icy roads.

stepping on the gas will override auto-braking with adaptive cruise control. I only do this when someone is slowing down to turn in a turn lane or a shoulder where I think the the ACC will try to slow me down. I don't have to do this on multilane highways if the cars ahead are staying in their lane.

The technology is actually pretty cool but does have some limitations as discussed above. It seems to work OK most of the time, but I still don't completely trust it.
Thus I stick to the old manual cruise controls most of the time.

PS: awaiting the "OK Boomer" reply I so richly deserve.
