I’m not sure if this question has been raised, but I am more interested in understanding a more holistic solution and if it feasible to support EV’s with respect to the ability to provide electricity to charge the EV’s?

Starting with the two most populated states #1 is California and #2 is Texas. California has a history of rolling brown outs/blackouts and cannot support the existing grid. In Texas power is managed by ERCOT and the grid is on the edge of failure (potential for brownout/blackouts) during the current heat wave. The Texas grid failed massively during recently during extreme winter conditions.

EV’s currently comprise 4.6% of current vehicle registrations.

If EV’s rise to 15% or 25% in the next 5 years does anyone believe we have the infrastructure to support the electrical supply requirements? How much of the current electricity is provided by coal, natural gas etc?

add in battery components and the associated mining necessary to extract minerals and metals for the batteries…and the associated damage to the environment…

add in future reclamation requirements of retiring millions of batteries and their toxins

unfortunately no one seems to address this end to end and what happens 5, 10, 15, or 50 years in the future.

    Rant over. Thanks for listening.

Ya thats the common debate. Mining and battery storage and disposal is always conveniently left out.

To your point a lot of power plants are being shut down as well...

Stove is gas but the oven is electric. So, technically, I have a coal powered oven and the battery powered cars around here are coal powered.:)

I read an article recently regarding solar panels. There was a huge solar push in the early 2000’s to install solar panels. Those millions of panels are expected to reach their planned end of life (25 years) in the next 2-5 years. Reclamation of the toxic components is challenging…no one thought ahead.

Wind mills….blades have a limited life span and can’t be recycled so they just bury the in landfills

generators in the windmills have a 4-5 year lifespan…takes huge diesel powered cranes to lift the new generators into place (and remove the old generator).

I am in full agreement we need to continue and explore energy alternatives but we need more focus on long term effects and creating solutions that are viable in the next century.

You mean nobody within your specific bubble/echo chamber. Just because it doesn't make the headline clickbait of your particular poison of choice, doesn't mean it isn't there. Especially when there's been 60 years of propaganda against fossil fuel alternatives...

    Lol

not sure what a “bubble/echo chamber” is…seems like I hit your button

no propaganda, just a discussion. BTW I actually worked as a lowly laborer in a fossil fuel alternative many years ago in a uranium mine and a uranium mill…not sure if that industry was regulated out of existence, but needs to be brought back as an alternative. What are your opinions on nuclear?
