Interesting...cause while I'm not in auto law enforcement-All the guys that I know who are will cite studies that state a 20-45% INCREASE in visibility- by measurement- not from word of mouth from someone who was just in an accident and is looking to limit their liability or is dazed.
There is a difference between cars and motorcycles too- People expect to see two lights and a car body so a quick look one light, smaller than normal, with no car- They discount it too fast.

Your blind/color blind statement doesn't make sense. If they are color blind they can't see some colors...which makes the world closer and closer to grey scale. And vision impaired folks...They might see the color they might not...Just like everyone else.

Another problem people have is judging the speed of motorcycles. They are coming much faster than people think.

I would just say get the color you like. I doubt it's going to be that big of a difference, stupid people are going to be stupid, there's nothing you can do about it.

I would say that out of the colors for the Tacoma's, not that I personally like it, the Speedway Blue. When I bought mine, that color just seemed to stand out from every lot I stepped foot on. Obviously I didn't take this into consideration since I got the Silver. I knew when buying that it is considered the worst from a safety standpoint, but it was one of my top 2 choices and I like it as it is easier to maintain.

It's called the Purkinje Effect. It's harder to see red when it gets dark out. Red is used in low light situations because it's easier for our eyes to transition from the total dark to red.

I read something quite a long time ago that said that was the reason why Red cars had higher insurance rates (other than the obvious "sport cars are red" thing).

X2 this is the bottom line. people, with time(and some without) get complacent with driving. they think they are such good drivers that they can do other things while driving. I drive alot, and these are just a few things that i have personally seen people doing while driving:
    talking on phone
    texting
    reading a book or newspaper
    working on a computer
    shaving
    putting on make-up
    eating

like i said this is just a small example of thing I have seen.
when police start enforcing the laws and drivers realize that they aren't behind the wheel to do everything other than drive, is when the roads will become safer...

This is true. The rods (the part of the eye responsible for low light vision) are not saturated with low wavelength light (Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green) so they remain "dark adapted" but the cones (the fine detail vision/color part of the retina are able to use the red to active enough to read maps/manuals/instrument panels. It provides an "in between" for mesopic vision.

On an interesting note- the low wavelength lights is better for your psychological situation- Green/blue are calming colors and at low intensities work almost as well as red for mesopic vision....Added benefit is that green makes florescent highlighter "glow in the dark" -Good for art projects and flying at night...

I don't know that my ttruck is any safer due to its color, but my Speedway Blue is very easy to find in a big parking lot. The color seems to really stick out - day and night.

Go to 3M and get sheets of "diamond grade 11" high intensity retro-reflective material for signs.Get the lime color like school signs. Visible by day , reflective at night.

As far as motorcycles and cars people say "I didnt see them" , a person either looks for the gap to get into ata stop sign and hits a bike , or they learn to look for the bike or car and they see them...... people often see what they want.

ps .....the part about the motorcycle is going faster than you think . Thats the false, but expected comment like ...didnt see them. I almost got hit on my dual sport , driver said i was going to fast , the officer and witneses disagreed base on the simple fact that i was in a group of cars going the same speed. I went into the bikelane , thecar behind me got stuck with hitting him at about 10mph. I

    Just give it some time
Fluorescent orange with neon green striping with silver Scotchlite. Of course, that'd be one hell of an ugly truck. lol

Certain colors do catch the eye better. Neutral colors like greys and beiges, they just don't pop. Red, electric blue, people notice. My Tacoma is bright red, as have been two of my previous vehicles. I've only had my Taco a couple days, but I've been very aware of the people who look in my direction when I go by.

Think about it when you're out on the road. What stands out to you?

as long as the DMV allows 90 year old people to drive, who have diminished depth of perception, reduced hand\eye coordination, and synaptic response equal to that of the three toed sloth, who gives a damn what color your car is.

There are people who deliberately cause "accidents". Attempted murder is what I call it, and it happens all the time, mostly for insurance fraud. It doesn't matter what color your vehicle is, or whether it has lights on or not, if someone really wants to involve you in an "accident" there is virtually nothing you can do. You have to assume that other drivers are trying to drive as safely as you, and mostly they are, but not always. If you are doing it right there will always be a small element of fear and paranoia when driving public roads. Unfortunately.

I was told white, grey, silver were hard to see when I was in a motorcycle class once. I at the time was wearing a white helmet due to "higher visibility". Next day it was pouring rain on the way to work and I almost forced a silver car off the road. Didn't have his headlights on and was the same color as road spray.

I googled "Why are school buses yellow" and found this... Sounds like my white truck is the stealth bomber of the freeway :D

    Some facts about yellow:
Yellow (and the yellow family of colors) gets your attention faster than any other color. People notice yellow objects first.
Even when you are looking straight ahead, you can see a yellow object that is not in front of you "in the corners of your eyes" much sooner than any other color – even red. Scientists describe this as follows: "Lateral peripheral vision for detecting yellows is 1.24 times greater than for red."
Many experts also point out that colors such as yellow or greenish-yellow are more visible to the human eye under dimmer conditions compared to red.
