A vehicle going up in flames. How many times have you been in a traffic jam only to drive by a fire truck that just put out an auto fire…. Gasoline is much more flammable. An EV is not more dangerous than riding around on 18 gallons of contained explosive material (gas) plus the added advantage of fumes that is even more dangerous. This argument against EV is like arguing that there is such a thing as “clean coal”

The question should read 'should I wait', followed by some info about your situation.

'Would you wait' addresses me and my situation.

So, since you asked.... I'm happy with my '13 5 lug. Perfect for how I use a truck.

When running a fuel based ROI, I could never recoup the cost to buy a new hybrid. And it's a rare owner who actually would.

When the '14 RAV deserves replacement in a few years, I'd consider a used hybrid version of that.

I dont envision ever buying any EV or any plug in type hybrid.

Would I? No. I will never - NEVER - own a hybrid or EV.

I'd do some serious thinking and firmly decide if you want a gas engine....or a hybrid engine.

Because that's really the decision you need to settle first.

Only way I'd wait is if I was 100% set on a hybrid.

If I'd be happy with a gas engine I'd buy a 3rd gen and start enjoying it now.

For those that say buy the 3rd then trade in later for a 4th I tend to disagree. Its going to cost you $$$ that way. Even in the best of circumstances you're going to pay more doing that. Plus, the current market is probably the worst time to try to buy a car. Between prices, lack of inventory, and inflation I wouldn't buy something I was going to turn around and trade in within a year or so.

In truth I think I'd wait either way. The car bubble is starting to burst. I think no matter which way you lean buying a car will be cheaper in the coming year.

The 4th generation Tacoma probably won't have a manual transmission option. As it is, the 3rd generation is one of the few vehicles that still has it. That's a main reason I bought mine when I did, even though I didn't need to immediately replace my older truck.

If I need a new car, nope. if I have too much time and money to waste, yup.... However, my next truck will be a full size and most likely a Tundra, but years down the road.

Buy a truck now. You can buy another truck later. It's a truck not a marriage.

On the other side, the last year of a generation is the one where every vendor with a part in that vehicle has been squeezed the longest and hardest for cost reductions while being asked to start making the new parts. :crapstorm:

I know a few people that will ditch the wife before their truck. Trucks are easier to live with... :)

I was hoping for much better fuel economy. Just like the RAV4 Prime!

Considering we will likely get a Tacoma with a 4 cyl turbo, too many speed transmission and no leaf springs, I would not wait. It is actually making me consider a 2023 Pro 6MT in Solar Octane. It will likely still be a good truck but I surmise the longevity will be reduced over the current and previous generations.

Nope. Toyota NA bungled the 3rd Gen launch. While by all reports the Tundra drives well, there has still been odd issues and recalls already. I would not trust my money on the 1st MY 4th Gen. Regardless of MFG, the best vehicle that you can buy is the end of a design run. You can see this in all of the reliability / issue ratings.

I agree with your post, but for me, it is funny. It takes ages for me to settle into a vehicle. 6mo to a year. The longer I have it, the better the bond. We tend to keep vehicles around for about 10yrs on average. This Taco (my exact one) is certainly fighting for the top spot on my favorites list. It ain't perfect, just like my marriage, but it works well.

Right they are marketing the hybrid Tundra as a power boost, not as a MPG champ. For the price difference it wouldn't be worth it lMHO.

You have more faith in auto manufacturers than I do. Usually real world fuel economy is worse that the EPA estimates. Ford's EcoBoost was a prime example of this. If it could get better you bet they would be boasting those figures.

This. If someone is buying a more expensive vehicle to get better mileage, then you need to learn how to manage your money better.

It is like the family friend of ours who sold their travel trailer and bought another one that was lighter weight due to gas prices. They paid $20k more for the new one :rofl:
