I purchased my sR5 long bed 2wd for 36.5k (good value on Trade in) just got off the phone with a sales guy at my local dealership that is offering 35k for my truck )plus tax credit) if I purchase a trd off road 4x4 at msrp at 43k. I really want a 4x4 but that’s steep for a want not a need. Wwyd?

Yes I can but hard to justify, I’m thinking of using my sr5 until prices stabilize. But that would be the truck I really wanted but settled because I’m cheap.

    “Real truck”?
Does yours have a 6 ft bed? Does it have a 1500 lb payload capacity? You know, for doing real truck things like hauling a lot of stuff in the bed.

    wwJimmyVd?

I’ve spent most of my life off-road, but in 2wd long travel prerunner style trucks.

    We’ll, I just bought a new TRD off-road 4x4.

I may not be as fast as I was, but I confidently know I can go more places.

In this market, assuming you like your SR5, and assuming it does all you need, I’d encourage you to keep it. Settling “because you’re cheap” (as you said) isn’t a bad thing. It means you paid for what you’ll use. I had an 2017 OR Tacoma. Since then, I have purchased a 4Runner SR5 and another Tacoma in SR5 trim. I never had need for the off road tech in the OR. I used the money I saved on wheel upgrades. I say spend your money on what you need and will use.

Now, having said all that, happiness counts, too. If you have the money and a new truck will make you smile…

I would personally(since you're cheap) find a base model OR or Sport for 38-40k and buy that instead with 4WD. 43k is either a loaded up with options=hella dealer profit or its a premium model with the bells and whistles which I think is worth it.

Without knowing how much you owe, and the delta interest rates between loans, and what the real out the door difference will be...

Nor do I know how many times you stood at the trailhead kicking rocks and muttering "aww shucks, I sure wish I could go..."

Nah, I dont need to know that stuff. Buy two, just in case .

Your truck plus $8,000 gets you a OR 4x4. Maybe consider it if you feel you can swing it financially and want it badly. Here is another way to look at it, look at all the Mods you can do to an SR5 with $8,000 dollars. Lastly, here are two great definitions of Wants and Needs that I found:
‘A need is something necessary to live and function.

A want is something that can improve your quality of life.”

Just do it. Once prices stabilize that also includes the value of your current truck not being as high as it is now as a trade in. I repeat, just do it!
