because it's all about the money. Can't be intruding into their profit margin. Why should they care about the environment, they'll all be dead and gone. Then it will be someone else's problem to solve, and the cycle just keeps going round and round. We haven't been very good stewards of our home.

I know that E.V. will be the wave of the future at some time. But we don't have the infrastructure currently in place to support them. It's all smoke and mirrors. Like the sleight of hand tricks, watch this hand, while I do the magic with the other one.

Can't speak for their charging stations, but gas stations tend to have the lowest profit margin among any industry. They have to prop themselves up with their convenience stores.

I don’t know about that, unless the Rivian dramatically drops in price. It’s comparable vehicles are a Tacoma, Gladiator or Frontier. You could buy any of those trucks plus a commuter car like a Mazda 3 or Chevy Bolt and still have gas money left over compared to buying just the Rivian.

The one thing you can always rely is humans desire to make money. EV recycling has a lot of options because the batteries are inherently expensive and they're the bottleneck in being able to scale up and make more money with higher margins. The California EPA has a whole working group on it. There's 5 separate startups working on it. The DoE is sponsoring a prize pool for solutions. In August, GM launched a dedicated battery recycling facility and have already "recycled 100 percent of the batteries it has received back from customers through warranty claims, trade-ins or leases since 2013.". The return on those recycling activities isn't nearly as good as it could be but people are trying. I'm hopeful.

It wasn't too long ago that if you told someone there'd be a 7200 pound truck that could do 0-60 faster than most consumer sports cars that they would have told you that it would never happen.

Even if it climbs to the rate that it is literally everywhere else in the world except the US, the equation changes very quickly.

Maybe not new compared to recent standards but for a long time the longest car loans were typically 48 months.

I remember the first seeing 60 and 72 month options and being like who the heck would do that.

Genuinely sad that the average is now 72

Assuming that everyone that bought a car also got a loan and made no down payment.

Why would the Rivian not climb in price as well? If you go on Rivians site and price out a truck with the mid size battery, quad motors, skid plate and all terrain tires it comes up to just under $95K. That’s stupid money for a midsize truck. A Tacoma TRD Pro is around $50K. A Gladiator Mojave is $55-60K. I highly doubt that $40K price gap ever goes away.

I'm comparing face value of average car price vs average car payment. There are obviously a lot of assumptions that could be made.

48000/72 months=$666. If you assume interest or TTT $700 is about par.

Exactly…it is more about making money than it is about saving the environment. Why I am not hopeful. We can’t even get a handle on landfill waste, among endless other things. Hell, don’t have much hope for the human race in general, seems like a constant battle over idealisms, people hate each other…so why even try to save it?

There will be a point when the planet has had enough of our bullshit, and shake us off…like it has done so many times in the past. To think we can engineer ourselves out of this mess we created, is rather naive.

It’s going up. Rivian raised prices on March 1 and initially lost a lot of preorders impacted by this price hike. Realizing that was a fuck up, they changed it so that any order placed before March 1 got the originally pricing. Orders after March 1 went up by about 18%.
