Want to preface this by saying its not a big issue and I'm not complaining, more curiosity than anything. Have a 20 OR with push start and the normal sequence is to push the button, car cranks for half a second or so and starts up normally. Every so often though I'll push the button and it'll make a weird subdued popping noise and starts immediately without cranking.

Wondering what causes that and if anyone else experiences that. Is it the position of the solenoid, pinion or gear ring in the starter? Anything else? Enquiring minds want to know...

Not sure but mine starts every time I push it with no issues. You think you would hear it crank over every time. Maybe someone else has had this issue but never heard till now. just saying.

Cool thx for the response. Will make me a little more nervous if I'm the only one experiencing this. It is a little unnerving hearing it when it happens.

I can say with certainty that it is NOT doing this. It may not sound like it, but it is definitely cranking. The 'weird, subdued popping' has me wondering. Can you describe that in more detail? Does this noise start as soon as you push the button? How long does it last? Where does it sound like it originates? How loud is the 'popping' noise? Popcorn? Bubble-wrap?

My factory battery developed a bad cell at 30 months. There was no popping noise just dead battery clicking sound. Eventually, a charger could not bring it back to life. Your issue may be different.

Hard to articulate it but it sounds like some sort of fuel detonation, it’s a tiny little pop and then the car starts up and runs fine. Sound comes from the engine bay. Doesn’t crank like it normally does. It’s more of an immediate turnover. Happens maybe every 1 in 8 times I start the car. I guess I’ll have to film every time I start it to compare a ‘normal’ start up to one of these instances.

Not liking the fact that nobody knows what I’m talking about. I was hoping I would get “oh yeah I get that too it’s such and such”

As I’m thinking more about this, I do have a Pedal Commander. I’ve had it for about two years now and hasn’t given me any trouble or codes but I suppose I could disconnect it just to see if that may be causing the issue

Definitely not that. I did a load test on the battery, everything is fine and has no trouble cranking whatsoever. But thanks for the suggestion

No issues with my '21 Sport...I'm at 14 months of ownership and 12,264 miles. --> Just had my 15K ToyotaCare yesterday so the mileage is fresh on my mind.

Pedal Commander? Not sure if that has any effect on the ignition system.

I've had 7.0 OTT Tune since May 24th...and 8.0 OTT update 2 weeks after initial tune.

    Definitely video your start up.

I'm trying to visualize your description all I can do is imagine that you have an old coffman combustion starter installed.

... Where can I get one of those?

my last push to start vehicle did the same thing when the engine was hot. i just assume the fuel is easier to ignite when the engine is already hot so it cranks over easier. maybe fuel vapor already in the cylinders? anyways, never had any issues, so I assume it's normal.

That sounds like a reasonable explanation to me I’ll have to keep track if it only happens when it’s already hot

I do live out in the desert and it gets 120+ so wonder if that accentuates it

Uh oh this could turn into a 91 vs 87 octane/pre-detonation discussion lol

you could do an experiment for us with octane and push-to-start "popping" noises lol

That's pretty normal for any vehicle to start quickly like that when it is warm.

If you're gonna post a 5 minute video in support of your starter joke, at least provide the time mark to skip to. Nobody's got time to watch the whole damn thing :D

... If you haven't seen Flight of the Phoenix- the Jimmy Stewart one, not the wish.com version with Dennis Quaid - then you'd know exactly what I was talking about with that scene.

Also, go watch Flight of the Phoenix you uncultured swine. That's one of the 100 must-watch-before-you-die films.

That's the best of the two movies.
    The newer remake sucks :puke:.
I saw the original 1965 Jimmy Stewart version at the theater when it was new. I have both versions on DVD.

There are very few remakes that can hold a candle to the original. That was not one of those.
