Leaving work last night I heard a whirling noise from under the hood. The noise is affected by RMP so I'm assuming a pulley issue. Today I heard it again but it went away after the truck warmed up. I have no warning lights on the dash, don't notice any lights dimming and my power steering is full so I'm hoping it's just a bad bearing. If I'm going to replace one I'd like to replace them all along with a new belt while I'm down there. Are over the counter parts good or should I order the OEM stuff or TIMKEN bearings online and re use my factory pulleys and only replace the bearings? Any advice would help, thanks.

Got a video or a better description of the sound?

Sometime the belt driven fan can make a roaring/whooshing noise as when they start getting old the fluid clutch in them doesn't always freewheel like it's supposed to until they warm up a bit.

If it's more of a whirr than a woosh/roar but isn't a squeal my guess would be the power steering pump is getting old, you can try changing the PS fluid especially if that hasn't been done in a while it should help.

If it's squealing then most likely a pulley, take the belt off and turn the pulleys by hand, give them a flick they should *NOT* free spin, only make it half turn or so after you let go and should be smooth and silent any gritty feeling or if they will make a full rotation ot more after a little flick they're worn out and need replacement.

I'll take a video when I leave work tonight. It almost sounded like that sound you get when you don't ground your stereo speakers properly but it's def under the hood. I noticed by PS pump was kinda dirty and always assumed it was my seeping timing chain cover which is right above it but I'll def check. I recently noticed my steering wheel feels more sensitive like I get a clunk from under the dash when I turn it hard to the right or left and sometimes over bumps I can feel it shake, it never did that before. I assumed that was a bad bushing in the intermediate shaft so I have some homework to do.

That clunk over bumps and play in the steering is usually inner and outer tie rods.

They don't always feel bad until you get them removed and then you can easily tell they're sore loose.

The power steering reservoir is always dirty, if the pump is dirty then it may be your valve cover leak or the pump may be failing.

You could put a shot of UV dye in your PS fluid and see if it shows up anywhere after a week of driving.

Yea nothing obvious. I wrote it off the other day cause it was raining really bad and I went through a few puddles and thought maybe things were wet but that can't be it. The power steering level has never dropped I checked the fluids often. Going to keep doing some homework.

Well I found the clunking noise when I turn was inside the cab and my rag joint had slop so I used the zip tie hack to fix. The whirling noise is still there and I'm still clueless. If anyone knew reads this thread I posted a video of the noise.

Use a stick or long screwdriver and place on different non moving parts on the motor while its running and you maybe able to narrow down where the noise is coming from.
Forgot to mention, put one end the stick or screwdriver on the part and put your ear to the other end and listen for the noise.

It was a worn bushing on my steering shaft inside the cab. I used the zip tie trick and it fixed it, no more clunking when turning.
