    I get that some people think that John Wayne played the same kind of role too many times.
    Some even say that he became a caricature of himself.
    But you can't say that about The Searchers.
    He plays an antihero in that one, in 1956, way before Clint Eastwood.

    The Searchers was, IMO, John Ford's masterpiece.
    Wonderful script.
    Strong cast: John Wayne, Jeffrey Hunter, Ward Bond, Natalie Wood, Vera Miles, Harry Carey Jr, and more.
    Gorgeous scenery (Monument Valley, for instance).





    One more thing: it was one of the few movies filmed in Vistavision
    So what's so special about Vistavision (I hear you asking)

    Well, at that time the movie studios were worried about television taking away their audience.
    They needed (they thought) something that would blow people away, something TV couldn't offer.
    Hence Vistavision.
    Without going into any technical details, it did everything they asked for...but was terrifically expensive.

    Watch The Searchers carefully and you'll see that the foreground and distant background are both in focus (pretty much).
    I've never seen another movie with such depth of focus.
    The effect is astonishing, you get the sense of immense distance, and it really draws you in.

    Oh, and don't get me started on The Quiet Man.
    In that one he plays an ex prizefighter who buys the ancestral farm in Ireland.
