I had an old employer that converted a box truck into a mobile laboratory. For who knows what reason they put in a tandem axle, which made it treacherous as hell. We drove it to oil rigs, which meant miles of poorly graded dirt. Any rut or bump lifted the drive axle off the ground and you were stuck like chuck.

So thats what I see whenever I see that silly-ass conversion. A memory of walking two miles to the rig at 3AM to find the boom-lift operator and offer an exchange of the contents of your ice-chest for a recovery tow.

 

Pdl hookups are pretty common with tandem axle builds nowadays. Just like a rear PTO to engage your rear axle.

To tow derelict buses out of the way
