A little disappointed in my 2004 Tacoma Prerunner today, mine has the locking rear differential, this morning I needed to pull up some iron stakes that have been in the ground since I bought my house, about 6 feet long with about 2 feet in the ground. So I take my truck in the backyard and engage the lock and proceed to pull out the stakes, started spinning right off so I put it in reverse and then forward to try again, no luck. At this point I decided to unhook the chain and get the truck out, still no luck, just spinning, ended up getting my neighbor to come over with his truck to get me out.

... Did you do anything like air your tires down, add some weight to the bed, or use anything to increase traction for the rear wheels?

A locked 2wd truck is still just a 2wd truck rather than a 1wd (open diff) truck. Not sure what you were expecting.

What is the condition of the ground that you are positioned on?

What is the condition of your tires?

a stake that' buried two feet with four feet sticking into the air, and you didn't use body weight (and maybe a cheater bar if the ground is packed) to loosen them?

Or was it just using the truck because it sounds more fun?:D

With 4wd you probably would've just been spinning the front tires as well

    but it would look cooler

    4 run, 2 don't
2 feet down is still pretty deep.

Hell, just a little deeper and it could've served as an anchor for winching out.

Do you have 2 trucks btw? You list having an '04 4x4...

The High Lift jack is great for removing Fence posts

Pulling in a Horizontal direction not so much.

    Pictures would have been great.

2wd empty trucks get stuck on wet grass.

Did the neighbor take out the stakes? Maybe should have used the 4x4 in your avatar box. Some pics would be nice.

Tires are Nitto Grapplers, fairly new, the ground was damp but no standing water, my yard does drop off from the house to where I got stuck about a 6 foot drop, I've had a'92 Toyota 4x4 before this one and feel confident it would of had no problems getting out.

So both your rear tires just dug into the grass and made nice holes??

Then with a 4x4 the front axle has the weight of the engine to help provide traction.

Owning one 2wd truck was enough lesson learned when you live in the woods.

Hook the chain low on the post, then up and over your spare tire standing upright next to the post, then to your truck. This will direct the pulling force up rather than sideways. Makes them come out much easier.

Where did you attach? If you attached lower at the base it will make it harder to pull. Higher up on the post will make it easier.

Did you try to pull them out by hand first?

Oh the childhood memories! I helped yank 20 miles of T posts with a High Lift jack. Plucked a few ground rods with em too.

Actually a tractor with a bucket works even better. Hook one end of the chain on the bucket, the ground person mans the other end, puts two wraps around the post, and holds tension. The tractor person raises the bucket. Ground person tosses the post in the bucket, and you go to the next post. In flat terrain you can easily do two or three post per minute.
