Managed to do this today... I'd rather not file an insurance claim. Anybody know the best way to go about replacing the damaged parts?

    Yeah.
Get a new/used tailgate and have a body shop paint it to match.

Other than Craigslist/Marketplace, do you know any good sources for it?

I’d just live with it unless you have money to blow. Finding color match is probably cheaper than getting one and painting it unless you find it for cheap

does it really bother you enough to spend the money on a new tailgate? it's good to take care of your stuff, but ultimately it's a utility vehicle and there's a good chance it'll sustain more damage over its life. personally I'd probably seal the chipped paint and keep using the truck.

    Yeah.
Well, OEM through a dealer is an option. Local salvage yards? I'd be concerned that ones on Craigslist/Marketplace are stolen, but it's an option to get one the color you need. They are on eBay as well, but you are looking at $850 to over $1K.

A paintless dent repair place might be able to take the dents out.

All good tailgates have a dent or two.....maybe three. It's part of the "using a truck as a truck" thing.

I looked on ebay for a gen 3 but didn’t find one. Maybe I didn’t search right but if you go for an oem at the $1000 price is more than I’d spend but on my old 2003 I replaced the rear bumper and light I spent about $300. So it’s whatever you want. It is a truck. Right. Good luck which ever you decide

A few additions to make me feel cool.
Step 1: Locate a Tacoma in your area that is the same color.
Step 2: Make friends with said name person.
Step 3: Invite them over to your house
Step 4: Feed them Taco Bell
Step 5: Swap tailgates when they are in the bathroom
Step 6: Leave their tailgate down
Step 7: Next time you see them say "oh no, looks like you backed into something!"

Personally I would just live with it. I would just make sure there is no bare metal. It’s a truck, it will have dings here and there overtime. That first one always hurts the most though, after it’s meh.
