Oh, and I have definitely camped/driven in areas where we may camp 25 miles in, then 25 miles back out, then drive a few miles down a paved road to another dirt track that goes 40 miles back. Unless there is a charging station that happens to be RIGHT where you need it, it is a no-go.

 

See above. 314 mile range. Charge, drive 57 miles to the entrance to the BLM land, 100 miles in, 100 miles out, drive 57 miles back.

I'd wager you don't do that one too often.

I've done pretty close to that in an EV. 314 miles isn't too dissimilar from a Tacoma's 15MPG * 21 gallon tank = 316 miles.

 

Dirt miles do not equal road miles though. I know I only get about 8mpg in my Tundra on dirt, but 13-14 on pavement.

 

It's not too bad if you're talking fire roads in an EV but yeah, it can get rough if you're talking actual offroad and crawling. It's more about elevation change than road surface.

These guys did 6,500ft of elevation over 18 miles on dirt roads and maintained 2.1 miles per kWh, which is about 300 miles of range. When they jumped from 6,500 to 11,200 in half the distance, it dropped to 1.1 mile per kWh.

You definitely have to be more conscious about your routes but for the bulk of people doing <50 mile each way into a dispersed site and not doing 11,000+ft of elevation change, you really don't notice you're in an EV for range. The range anxiety is _way_ overblown.

Mojave Road, without any side trips is 120 miles + over 2-3 days. I'd hate to have to pop out just for a charge.
Again, for 99.9% of the general public though, it is fine.

 

Haha... Yeah, I know that first hand from my E Mountainbike. It can cruise "forever" on flat, but in Boost mode I can only get about 21 miles and 3,500 ft of climbing.

the last trip it was 240 miles round trip, so well within Rivian’s range…what would of killed it is we did a few runs into town (60 miles round trip) that bumped the mileage over 400 miles. Though, on that particular trip I do see now there is a charger at Tamarack resort, could of hung out there for the day riding mountain bikes and playing on the lake to top off the batteries. Usually head from Boise up to Stanley…nothing there, but some chargers in Ketchum/Sun Valley, Rivian would feel right in place. Could hit there on the way home.

Not many chargers in the middle of Idaho, unless I could talk a private residence or business into their source.

Would be nice to charge it with solar or hydro while parked. Usually try to camp next to creeks.

 

You can do 140 miles of charge in 20 minutes on a DC fast charger. Pop in for a beer, come out and head back! But I never pass up on an opportunity to pull the bike off the tailgate, either.

Exactly, the rule of making stops with an EV is ABC (Always Be Charging).

 

The one thing that would overcome this whole charging issue is the theoretical idea of putting in wireless charging (like for phones) directly into the road so you can charge while you drive.
When doing a super log distance drive, it would suck to have to pull over for an hour+ of charging every 300 miles. Filling a gas tank is more like 5 minutes (ok, ten if you have to take a leak).

 

That’s seems super easy. They can probably just throw that it while they are replacing all of the roads.

 

Close... Not tray, but I do have a pop-up topper (Super Pacific) being built right now. Pick it up in Sept. Already have what I need for a full solar setup and even the ability to charge ebike (not the roll around town type, full on downhill style MTB). Only think lacking will be hot water and a pooper.

 

what do you consider an "acceptable" time span, for say charging from zero miles - 150, and then similarly say from zero miles -300


would you wait 5, 10, 15, 30 minutes??

Zero to 300 in 20 minutes would be about the tipping point. Many of the trips I do (CA to UT) are in the 600+ mile range and I wouldn't want to have to stop for over an hour just to make it there.

 

Imagine as time goes on, more and more of these little towns I go through will get chargers. They already have power, just a matter of installing them. Surprised Stanley doesn’t have one yet since it is a popular destination, and not too far up the mountain from Sun Valley. See an awful lot of spendy rigs when I go through there. Driving a Tacoma through there is almost an embarrassment…
