Id avoid those things. Most are made out recycled railroad rails or similar trash metal. Thus very hard and brittle. Drilling any holes in them can be a bitch.

    And I'm an idiot.

    I didn't buy a latching mechanism

There's a large variety out there in the market, but I guess once I finish up the bumper I can decide how I want it to remain secured.

    Hell, good to know.

I just remember someone in this thread stating they've used plenty with great success.

I don't know, I've never tried. Been fortunate enough that my scrap is basically 'unused' steel that was too short to use for any real large job.

Speaking of, I got more steel today.

    I bet.

I've gotten some free, clean as hell flat steel that was considered 'scrap' just because the job calls for 48" long.

The 6" x 45" x 1/8" was 'scrap'...clean as hell. As well as the 30" and shorter pieces.

Oh ya I think I suggested it. My neighbor would pick up every bed frame in the gutter of Aurora for odds and ends jobs

    I do.

And it's changed slightly since my cardboard cutouts.

I want to unbolt (and if applicable, cut) the bars that create a "V" just behind the crossmember.

Also want to get rid of the spare tire carrier.

This will free up plenty of room underneath to allow me to make my own crossmember for tying in a tow hitch.

Only thing is, I don't want a boring flat rear face so I want to do something similar to my front bumper and have the hitch recessed back a bit. I don't like the hitch sticking out, or worse, flush with the bumper face.

I'm thinking I'll take some steel to school this Monday (last week) to get the straightest cuts on the big pieces.

2 years and 20,000 miles since the burnt valve and that thing is still running great with no leaks. That makes me so happy.

I avoid stuff like bed frames also due to the paint. Shit smells horrid when you grind it off or weld on it a bit. I aint broke enough to not buy clean steel when I need it.

You just having mentioned the steel being recycled and all made me give up the idea right away.

If I need it for myself, I'll gladly buy it.

The idea was just to have steel in case a job presented itself for a quick fix, etc.

I should buy some angle just to have it...hmmm
