Pair of threaded holes the right one is rusty. Top section of bed next to the cab. Maybe for factory tonneau cover or other accessory? I know I can clean it up but I've only had it a month. Maybe I can find a plastic bolt to fit to keep out water until I buy a cover.

Yes, those are the mounting holes for the "locating pin" for the OEM tonneau cover. They're rusty because they're ferrous metal and have been exposed to moisture.

Edit. Apologies. I was looking at something else. Tonneau cover mount it is. Thanks for all who pointed out my error.

I'm gonna check my oil, or at least get the hood propped up. I've done it before, and that thing is friggin' heavy.

This. They are not for the front rail as someone else said. Front rail attaches where you see the torx head screw just below the two you’re talking about.

This is incorrect. As @tirediron mentioned above, the 2 holes referenced in the pic the OP posted are for the OEM tonneau cover. The front rail mounts using the lower row of holes.

Actually... the mounting holes for the tonneau cover center pin or 'datum' in Toyota speak:

put a little "never-seez" on a couple of button head screws and put in those holes.

I also put a little WD-40 in mine using a Q-Tip. 2 years later and the rust has not returned.

1st it was the Tundra waste gate problem, now this. What is going on over at Toyota? They don't build them like they use to!

Apologies, I jumbled up my pics , as I was thinking about something else.. it absolutely is the mount location for the OE cover , not the bed rail . I should know better since my last Tacoma had the OE cover with that bracket.

Either way, WD40 lasts me @ 12 mos , or someone also mentioned a Cosmoline type protectant which may last even longer. I figured most people have WD in their garage.

Cleaned out the holes and found these in my hoard. Fit perfect and have another set of ties even if they are a bit delicate. This is why I don't throw stuff like that away. I'll just pull them out every so often and re apply wd-40 or similar. Thanks all. Whew I'm worn out from all that work!
