Check every nut and bolt before leaving. Yeah OK. Why are you defending people who screwed up their job?

 

Take it from an old fool that grew up with cast iron blocks and heads to now all aluminum air cooled and water cooled engines. Aluminum expands and contracts with temperature changes at much greater rates than cast iron. I don't know how many of my riding buddies have blown head gaskets on their Harley's over the years because they simply didn't take the time to properly warm the bike up before heading out. My truck and my wife's CH-R are the same way. Neither leaves the driveway until the temperature needle bumps past C. You'd be surprised at the amount of engine related headaches you'll save yourself.

Yup, or oil leaks on the lower jug gasket. Warm it up, and be light on the throttle for the first 10 min or so.

 

Nowhere am I defending anyone who screwed up a job. You do not have to check every bolt, but should at least check the oil and take a peak under the vehicle to see if anything is dripping/leaking.

 

Yep. Not checking the oil pan drain is like not checking to see if your parachute is safely buckled...

If I pay someone to change my oil it’s my job to check that they actually put new oil in and check for leaks???? Isn’t that what we are paying for? Most people that pay for an oil change are paying someone else to do it because they either don’t want to or can’t do it themselves.

 

Would be pretty ignorant not to double check other people's work. That goes for auto mechanic, auto body, home repairs, etc.

 

Love finding free towels under the hood from the dealer…….

 

I guess I must have better work ethic than most. I expect no one to have to check over my work and expect the same from others. If you’re paid to do a job then do it right.
Also to stay on topic here is the OP supposed to open up his engine and make sure they torqued everything properly?

 

Update 7/29/22:
The shop called yesterday to tell me that MPP agreed to the repair (YAY!) and has ordered a replacement engine (used) that should arrive next Thursday.

I asked if he know anything about the new engine, and he said they’d check it out when it arrives (see if it’s been visibly damaged in transit and make sure it wasn’t stored in bad condition)

I’m still concerned with putting a used motor in my truck so I called MPP to get more info and understand the process. MPP has been helpful but sense some “tension” between the shop and extended warranty, probably normal biz stuff..

I asked for details about the used engine and this is what the guy told me:
-Engine is the same part # as current
-Engine has 55k miles on it
-Engine is from a salvage due to “rear end collision”
-they’re going to pay about $6800 for the motor and the shop is going to charge about $3500 install (about $10.3k vs. the shops quote of $12k for new short block

I asked how they know it’s a good motor, and he said they use a great sourcing company that only gets motors from non roll over or front collision wrecks

Then I asked them the same questions they asked me.
-were any modifications made to the vehicle?
- was it well maintained (are there any maintenance records)
- any major off-roading done in salvage vehicle?
- did the salvage vehicle have 35 inch tires or bigger
- did they do a lot of towing?

of course they don’t have any of this info and don’t know, and told me again that they have a great company they buy from…

I’m glad I won’t have to eat the cost and if I was going to trade it for another just like it wouldn’t worry about it, but I’m mad at Toyota and like my truck so leaning hard towards keeping her, and don’t want to get screwed for a difference of $1700 for 55k miles of use..

What do y’all think???

 

If it where me, I’d either get a free extended warranty out of them or I’d trade it off as soon as the market gets out of crazy mode.

 

Unfortunately I don't think there is any way for the warranty company or even the sourcing company to know that information unless they can see it on the vehicle....larger tires, obviously modifications, etc. The good news is you're not eating the cost, and I think as long as your shop does a competent job doing the swap odds are you will be ok. If it were me and you like your truck otherwise, I would try driving it for a while before you make that decision. It might even give the market some time to adjust so you don't get so screwed if you choose to trade it for another Tacoma (or something else if your love affair with Toyota is now over). I don't think it's something you need to do right away. Just my $0.02.

 

If it were me and I planned on keeping the truck I would see if I could pay the $1700 out of pocket for the brand new engine.

 

I didn’t ask that, will though.

 

The odometer will not change. It's a measure of the miles the vehicle has driven, not the engine.
