oil filter change without changing oil?

Hope this isnt a dumb question. Got a new 2011 tacoma and had a question after reading many posts on this site about synthetic oils, etc. I don't think id go over 5000 miles without changing the filter so I may save some bucks and use synthetic blend instead. Any thoughts of changing just the filter if it can be done since the filter sits on top?

 

Yes it can be done...It can be done even with the bottom mount filters. Some folks use new filters with the same oil for 10-15K OCIs.

I would get an oil analysis workup done...Make sure your oil choice is a good one and keeping up to the task.

Thanks for the replies. If I ever did let my oil go past 5k, I def change the filter.

 

knew an old man who put 250,000+ miles on his 1970's model (chevy i think) truck. he always told me he would change the filter every 2,000 miles or so and top it off with oil. said he'd only change the oil every 10,000 miles or something like that. i guess that made more financial since back then, and apparently didn't do his truck any harm. so yeah go for it. i don't run synthetic and don't have the balls to stretch the conventional stuff that long but hey i say go for it.

 

I use Mobil 1 Synthetic. I have the dealer change it every 5k since it is still under warranty. I had an 07 that I ran Amsoil with an Amsoil filter. The filter ruined the engine and Amsoil had to pay for a new one. So I would definitely recommend using only a Toyota filter.

i change my oil once a year.......and the filter at 6 mos.

The filter became clogged and starved the engine for oil. My oil light came on and a few seconds later there was a rod through the side of my block. Amsoil analyzed the filter and said it was fine and they would not be liable. I kept pursuing the issue and had a third party analyze it. They found it to be plugged so Amsoil had to pay me for the price of a new engine. It was advertised and sold to me as a 25k filter. It had 12k on it when it happened.

 

what filter was this?

 

It was an Amsoil EO57. Amsoil has a bulletin out saying not to use these on Toyotas.

Yeah, I would think that it is very rare. I just happened to be the unlucky one! At least I got paid though! I can't handle a 7 grand hit!

 

I had a sienna come into work with the oil light on, had verry little oil pressure... ended up finding the cause of there problem was an amsoil filter, luckily no major damage was done to the motor
