Tacoma Vs. Rivian

One thing I have grown to hate is stopping to get fuel for the work commute. Getting rid of that would be fantastic.

On trips, not much in a hurry these days…maybe plan the stops around good food and coffee joints.

 

I think that's where Toyota is going to come in with their solid state batteries that they have patents on. These companies have a huge team of researchers and scientists trying to figure out how to make the battery manufacturing process cleaner. Like any new technology it's going to take time. Definitely not in a perfect state right now, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't keep moving forward with trying to improve it. Also I think they will always be a place for fossil fuels and gas stations won't be going anywhere anytime soon.

 

Same here man! That's why I'm a big believer that the plug-in hybrid technology is really good right now. Take the RAV4 Prime. The first 50 miles is pure electric. That would get us through 90% of our driving. On those occasions that we do take a road trip or do more driving on a certain day, it would fall back to hybrid (gas and regenerate the electric motors) which would get like 80 miles per gallon and a 600 mile range. I would like to see them implement this technology in the Highlander soon.

 

Hells yeah. Traveling is supposed to be about journey not the destination. Like to take my time and bump around looking for hidden gems. Would love a PHEV Tacoma.

 

Funny enough that is what happens when you stop to charge. This is by the Supercharger in Quartzsite, Arizona. Did you know there was a US Army Camel Corps?

 

Just to be clear: this is all FUD. Even an EV charged from the worst coal plant is still better for the environment than the highest efficiency gas car. ICE engines are horribly inefficient and gas is horrible for the environment. It's also nowhere near impossible to dispose of and much of it is recycled.

There's plenty of reasons that an electric vehicle might not be the right choice for someone up to and including "I just don't want to". But let's not make things up.

That particular point has probably been addressed 30 times in this thread. Here, let me sum this entire thread up for you:

• It takes 32 hours to drive 6 hours Denver to Moab (it doesn't: it takes 6 hours, 20 minutes more than with a gas car)
• EV range is prohibitive to the majority off roading use cases (it isn't, with 314 miles of range you would be able to drive 57 miles from a charger, 100 miles into the forest/desert, 100 miles back out and 57 miles back to the charger. if you do that, then yes, it is, but statistically I think this is uncommon)
• EV can light your house on fire and kill your family while charging (they don't, they have a lower incidence of fire than ICE vehicles per the NHTSA nor could I find a single incidence of this occurring)
• EV use the same batteries as RC cars which you know explode (they don't, LiPo vs Li-ion)
• Producing batteries causes more environmental damage than driving a gas car (false, the EPA got so sick of hearing this that they had to create a fucking myth page for it)
• Batteries are charged from fossil fuels and are therefore worse than putting those fossil fuels in a gas car and using them (false, the EPA got sick of this one too)
• EV batteries are impossible to dispose of (false, GM recycle them and so do most others)
• Battery technology is bad and I don't even charge my phone while I sleep because it could kill me (someone actually said this)

There you go. Boomers and luddites refusing technology. (Ed: I say this mostly in jest. I think a lot of people have been subject to misinformation that is often repeated that kind of sort of sounds right to someone who isn't an engineer and so it gets repeated and repeated and becomes truth.)

There are some valid points in this thread and in the interests of representing both sides fairly, here are the ones that I think aren't just bullshit FUD and scaremongering.

• EV range suffers with large towing load and if you're towing a large load and going deep overland/offroad, the range is likely insufficient.
• Relatedly, big loads in general aren't a good fit and so EV can't/won't replace all use cases (think big rigs, road trains)
• If you're someone who is actually doing multi-day overland trips hundreds of miles away from civilization, it's probably not a good fit. It's harder than you think to actually do this, though. For example, Motortrend drove the Rivian R1T across the Trans America Trail in 43 days. That trail is almost entirely off the paved path. They took a RAM 1500 recovery vehicle with them... and it got stuck and had to be rescued by the R1T.
• There are "charging deserts" in the United States, particularly in the midwest, where having an EV today is probably not a great fit. (Side note: this is because of bullshit lobbying based on the above FUD and scaremongering paid for by oil and gas, but anyways, it's still a fair point.)
• I like when my car go vroom vroom. I own a 911, I sympathise. I'll always like when car go vroom vroom.

 

Boomers and luddites that probably also thought the first commercially available residential computers were useless or stupid and didn’t recognize the dawn of a new era even as it slapped them in the face. I believe the term is called “willful ignorance”

Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt

 

I'm not an expert and I don't pretend to be. I provide well resourced answers and evidence that allow you to educate yourself and if you don't want to do that and instead make pithy remarks while refusing to update your world view, that's entirely your perogative.

FUD is "fear, uncertainty and doubt". The dictionary definition sums it up nicely because it's exactly the sentiment that's trying to be evoked here: usually evoked intentionally in order to put a competitor at a disadvantage.
