Facts…there really seems to be two divisive camps on this subject. Toyota loyalist fanbois who “say” their 3rd gen runs great, up mountains, with 33s and that the rest of “us” just don’t know how to drive. And conversely, there’s everyone else on planet earth who know the transmission/engine/tall oem gears are absolutely atrocious, and the only remedy is regearing. These are facts, and are not disputed.

I love these posts as well, thank you for providing the framework on which you lecture us on what our trucks are designed for, and that we’re delusional because we’re not happy with said trucks.

    Some great entertainment here !
I don’t understand brand loyalty and cult like following of any manufacture. It’s not like they care about you, they wanna make you just happy enough to buy their new better shit. I think the new Colorado looks pretty sweet, but I’m more of a full size guy. Joined here recently to learn more about the Tacoma I recently ordered. Chose a Tacoma because bidding contract to leave the country again for a couple years. It will be Mexico or Central America so I need something simple that I can maintain and get parts for easily. The hilux I had when I lived in Mexico was a great all around truck and the 2.7 has well proven itself.
Seems most all modern vehicles are having some sorts of issues so if one’s a turd, they all are. When I get back stateside, hoping to find a proven track record of the turbo i4 Silverado Jay is talking about. Not crazy about the complexities, but everything is going that way. Kinda sad about giving up my 2020 sierra crew. I’ve experienced some issues, but it rides nice, is more comfortable at 85 mph than a mid size at 60, gets 26 mpg interstate with 5.3, and has enough room for a full on circle jerk

here’s mine on i84 south of Boise. Dumb thing wants to stay in fourth. You can see when I hit the gas it will drop to sixth but then go back to fourth. I love my truck, but this is stupid.

I drive I-84 every now and then for dirt biking heading to Idaho City, Blacks Creek, or coming back from Stanley going through Ketchum. Mine doesn’t do that, don’t know what to tell you. Are you heavily modded, over payload, or larger tires without a regear? All of the above? Looks like you have the cruise on, so the computer is trying to maintain speed and an efficient rpm, so it is battling itself. Plus the adaptive cruise setting will make it fluctuate more, try the constant speed instead. It isn’t the tranny, drive it without the cruise it won’t do that, or put it into S5. Could also hit the ECT button to move the shift point up.

Just did trip up 55 to Cascade, McCall, then down through New Meadows 95. No gear hunting at all, loaded down with gear pulling my moto trailer. Only thing I had to do is toss it into S-Mode on the descents so I could engine brake to keep off the brakes.

Next time I am on the interstate, I’ll get a video and show ya. Maybe I’ll take it in for the work commute tomorrow. It is within city limits, so the speed limit is 65, be around 1600-1700 rpm all the way in.

Skinny 255 33’s. I’m glad your truck is fine but the amount of people who are upset with theirs is well documented here. All this to say that it’s fair to acknowledge the Colorado 8spd might not be good but let’s not pretend ours is universally praised.

theres a reason why there are half a dozen successful tuning companies that make a living off of trying to calm that terrible trans down. the old 5 and even 4 speed trans worked better

Have a friend who’s taco does this and is completely stock, even tires. Believe it’s a 2017. Must be a software thing, but also with cruise off, will shift from 6 to 4 with anything but a slow gentle press on the pedal at 75 or so. Annoying as hell.

So heavy E Rated tires then, guessing no regear since you didn’t mention it. That is part of your issue. The 3.5 is also NA, it is going to want to rev. Turbos not so much, the Colorado won’t shift as much since it will have a flatter torque curve.

I am sure if Toyota slaps turbos on the Tacoma, people will piss and moan about something with that too.

No the Tacoma’s trans isn’t universally praise, however I do notice there is a common denominator, most are heavily modded and over payload, issues caused by the owners doing. Any time you add weight or rotational mass, it will suffer elsewhere. Majority of the problems would go away if those mod crazy people would start off with a bigger truck. My rule of thumb with any platform is try to stay at half of the vehicle’s capacity. If you can’t, move up to another class. I used to operate heavy equipment, you can have the biggest bestest truck…but you can go over its limits…and it sucks no matter what it is.

Must be, mine is ‘21, cruises at 75 no problem. Sure it adjusts the throttle (but not shifting) to maintain speed when pulling hills, but that is what it is supposed to do. My manual 1st Gen would do the same thing, only thing different, if it was working too hard loosing speed it would kick off the cruise control.

My stock 2017 did exactly the same thing as in that video above. The 2022 does the same thing now as well. It does it on highway and around town. Obviously isn’t a deal breaker for me but after coming out of a Hyundai and a Jeep (both 8 speed autos) that never did this, I hope That 4th Gen finally resolves these issues. It’s sad when a Jeep product simply drives better (shift logic wise).

Here you go, did three different settings, adaptive, constant, and none. All with the same results other than my foot not being consistent. Our conditions look to be about the same, dry and around 70°. Tried to mimic your filming, to show it is actually going down the interstate, and not up on jackstands. :)

I-84 North of Boise. 80 mph @ 2000 rpm, no crazy fluctuations.

Clearly the difference is the relative location of Boise.

Fun fact: the first gen was the most powerful compact truck with the most advanced engine when it came out. Neither the 2nd, nor 3rd gen could take that title.

They have owned the market for a long time though, and keep smoking everyone else in sales because of their reputation.

Toyota fans do not care about performance numbers. They didn't when Ranger had the best nubers on paper.

This is a GM product the relevance of what Toyota fans like is irrelevant. I wasn't all that interested in this new Colorado from the beginning, I did want to see the reveal just to seewhat GM was doing with their midsize. I'd say this new truck looks like an improvement over the last generation, and the WT could be interesting. Three day after the reveal, and I'm about as excited about the new Colorado, as I was the previous generation.

That is for sure, rather have long term reliability over all out performance. Hell, I almost bought the 2.7 4 cylinder, since not much in a hurry these days. But my wife talked me out of it. Imagine reliability will go down when they add turbos. Hopefully there is an engine option without turbos, seeing the Tundra doesn’t offer it I have my doubts. Not that it matters plan on keeping this truck at least 10 years, should be full EV options by that time.

Honestly, most people do not keep their vehicles long enough anymore that the long term reliability even comes into play.

Most of the opinions and thoughts on enthusiast boards like this are the outliers. Those of us who keep trucks for 10+ years, who want manuals, who want extended cab long beds, etc.

95% of truck owners buy or lease them for the look or status, trade in after a couple of years, never haul more than the weekend Lowes trip, never tow, never go off road, and never modify the truck. These are who the manufacturers target, as they should since that is where they make their money.

The ZR2 will be a $55k+ truck and most will never see actual off-roading.

I don't know how many people are looking for performance from a midsize to begin with? I can't see where being the class leader in stats, can be a negative.

I can't see where BEV will prove to be reliable. Battery cooling complexity, seems to be the limiting equivalent to emissions systems on ICV.
