Yeah man, no regrets. Love the stance.

I’m on 35s and I get the same, only on flat ground. I get about 16-17 mpg highway stock gearing. City miles, LOL.. not even saying.

Lower RPM now always a good thing. Could be more engine strain.

My truck does not like overpasses or hills. Definitely no mountains. I just downshift, definitely needs some gears.

I wonder if the OE gaskets are crappy and how upgraded alternatives might be

Japanese car often use paper style gaskets that blow
As opposed to German cars use metal style multi-layer gaskets that can last the life of the engine and never blow, so long as no other issues happen

only one I’ve seen was where driver hit something, busted the radiator, lost all coolant, and didn’t turn off the engine in time. Causing it to overheat and likely warp the aluminum cylinder head

Smaller 33’ spins faster so higher RPM, problem is if there’s power or not and MPG struggling to move it with stock 3.73 gears
Did you regear? Did you have any trouble selling the old 33’s?

Looks good but I bet you're not actually at 70 if going by the speedo.
Speedo is going to be off with bigger tires.

Also bigger tires means more distance traveled per rotation. So that tracks with a lower rpm. But its more load on the engine at a lower rpm as well.

Check out the tire size calculator to get an idea about how it affects rpm, speed, final drive ratio. https://www.tacomaworld.com/tirecalc

Just got home from a 500+ mile road. The 500+ miles consisted of 7 mountain passes and roughly 350 of those miles were off pavement and 5 of the 7 passes were non pavement. Needless to say my truck is a dust bucket. While unloading gear I noticed my drivers side rear wheel was exceptionally nasty. Under closer inspection looks like I’m slinging gear oil all over the inside of my rim and is leaking profusely from the drum. I will do a thorough inspection tomorrow morning. Going to check if the breather is plugged too. It’s too hot outside to lay on the asphalt this afternoon. It’s 110 outside right now. Ive referenced the axel seal replacement write ups and I think diy replacement of the seal is outside of my wheel house due to needing a press and all the speciality tools. What’s a fair price I should expect to pay to have this done by an independent shop? I know it varies. Just give me ballpark so I have an idea when calling around.

Trip was amazing for what’s it’s worth. 7 day journey of phenomenal fishing and trail running.

Edit: also what’s the average life of these seals? Truck just rolled 102k. Been a shit month for the truck. First broken passenger leaf pack. Second driver side lower ball joint took a dump. Now rear axel seal. Fml.

I packed her up for the run up to Oregon for Dunefest. It will be interesting to see how she does on the more mountainous portions, since I’m pulling my trailer/RS1.

Seal is leaking. Oil leaking from bottom of the drum. Breather may or may not have been plugged. Unscrewed and tapped the hell out of it and a bunch of dust and mud came out. Cap moves freely now and can blow air through it. Reinstalled. Time to go get some quotes on replacement now.

Also while down there noticed the driver side leaf cracked and separated on this weeks expedition. Passenger side took a dump 2/3 weeks back. Secured 3rd gen take offs with aal’s. Hopefully can get them out on this week or coming weekend. Passenger side broke in front of the axel. Drivers side behind the axel. Oddly enough same leaf on both sides.

Did a couple maintenance related items. Changed brake pads to akebono pro-acts, full oil and filter change, cabinet filter change, rear and front diff oil changes, also swapped the front diff drain plug with the lexus alternative as a precaution (mine was not remotely loose on the allen socket). I don't remember doing the rear diff, but the oil in it was beautiful and unsullied, whereas the front diff was cloudy and runny.

Local independent shop quoted just south of 400$ for seal and bearing replacement only. Just south of 700$ to replace everything including shoes if not save able.
Went to Toyota for a quote and it was as expected. 1889.96 to replace everything including the shoes. Made use of the dealer trip though and picked up a new serpentine belt, plugs, and resupply of filters and gaskets.

don’t know about Toyotas but my 2005 GMC Sierra had a rear clunk that ended up being the yoke on the driveshaft where it attached to the transfer. Just a thought
