Tickling the brain this evening. Anyone ever run a 12” shock on ifs with dual rate coils? Guessing a 12” shock would be the shortest that could fit two coils. Curious if it would articulate better than a single rate 8” coilover. Maybe a 10” with a longer lighter coil would be better.

I looked into it for a bit but the rate change when you hit the slider stop seems too dramatic. I could be wrong though

That makes sense. If the rates were too close to minimize that transition I guess you might as well just run one light coil

Pretty sure war fab makes front coilover and control arm mounts for a 10” body though

Do you have a rear sway bar? That could help transfer weight to the front and help flex.

I don’t, but that might help. I just swapped to 18” 500# coils and added about 200# to the rear but I’m not back on the ground to do a test run yet. Adjusting my rear dual rate to engage the heavier coil sooner helped a good bit.

Both Solo and LSK have kits that run 10 inch dual rates.

Why a 12”? There’s a few companies that offer shock mount for a 10”. The issue you’ll run into is finding the proper spring rate for these trucks to make a dual rate work well. Maybe a 12” will open up your options but I doubt it. Also curious of what your thought process is for the benefits of “crawling” purposes?

Edit: I say that loosely. You can make it work. You’ll have LOTS of preload in the springs so the longer shock will help you with spring travel before bind.

I know the solo xlt kits I’ve seen pictures of run the 10” with dual rates… just no idea what those rates are.

Just making conversation, not contemplating doing it. I don’t know if dual rate would do much for crawling really. Fitting a lighter rate longer coil would probably be a better benefit for a longer shock.

I guess what I’m really trying to figure out is why IFS doesn’t stuff like a live axle. Is it packaging because of a shorter shock and thus a shorter heavier coil is required or is it something else inherent in the design itself?

Shorter shock placed more inboard of the centerline. Move your shock pivot out much closer to the wheel and it will articulate far far easier

Would think it’d be stiffer the further the lower mount got to the wheel with the same coils at least. Further in and it’d probably do some really strange things

Gotcha. The issue is the load forces on an IFS due to the higher motion ratio. Due to the force multiplier, these trucks require heavy spring rates to achieve the desired ride height, which in turns doesn’t allow the same amount of flex as other designs.

I’m not a suspension engineer. Just my understanding of the setups.

That’s my thinking, too. Could it be as simple as fitting a longer shock with a longer lighter coil? Might be worth looking into if I can’t get what I want from the current packaging.
