Not here to argue, but I didn't see anything mentioned about oil filters. Using cheap oil filters for extended oil changes can be dangerous for your engine. The short media found in cheaper filters can fill up quicker and start to bypass sooner, causing unfiltered oil to flow back into the engine.

I will say this, every vehicle is driven differently in different environments. The variables are too immense to put a one size fits all on it.

Why do people keep posting this, its not even the same engine. I guess if you have a 2.7 Tacoma it applies. The guy even said he had no clue what oil was used, he even said it was most likely that the cheapest oil possible was used, it not like that matters or anything:confused:. This seems more like PSA on poor dealership maintenance practices. Here is a guy with 400k that did 8-12k oil changes, https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/400-000-miles.404359/ and most people with high mileage post do 10K oci.

I know someone who just passed away at 101 years of age. I was lucky enough to speak with him at length the months approaching his passing. I know now exactly how he did it. Guess I’m all set based on your anecdotal example.

If I’m going to live that long I need to REALLY figure out this oil interval thing real quick.

Take a slug of olive oil every day. i've been told thats the key. My mother made me take a spoonful of caster oil every morning before school, i don't if it helped or not,but it kept me regular. I hated that crap.

You had to drink a spoonful of Castrol every morning? Why that's just terrible. The taste must have been awful. I can't imagine being able to keep that down.

Oh wait, you said caster oil. Nevermind.3C5412EE-20F0-4684-B9D5-A7C0F0C8FBB8.jpg

Lol there is actually a TSB about this the problem it is not caused by OCI, the piston/ring design is flawed. This problem even affected early 2000s models that still had 5k OCI called out in the manual. Pretty clear the 10k OCI wasn't to blame, for a master tech he seems not to well informed, that or he is spreading misinformation to support his own opinion on OCI. Link to TSB here

So you're saying these two different Toyota 4cyl engines (the one in your example, and also the one in the quoted video) produced by the same bulletproof manufacturer known the world over for quality, have the same serious defect that causes them to absolutely guzzle engine oil? Wow, that doesn't say much for Toyota.

Toyota makes alot of engines, they can't all be winners. At least they made a solution and TSB them.

2.5 2AR's are starting to burn oil like the 2.4 2AZ's

It's not as common but its gunked up ring lands.

3.5's or 4.0's burning oil due to rings or pistons is stupid rare.

Nah, no worship. But he is an experienced Toyota technician who's most likely seen the inside of way more Toyota engines than anyone posting in this thread. I'll keep his advice in mind over randos posting on a forum (yes, I can see the irony).

What's your opinion on the cause of the gunked up ring lands?

I've always believed (with no evidence to support) that pistons mounted strait up and down were more prone to this then pistons mounted at an angle. Like the rings "drain" better an angle or something.

Is it flawed to the point that OIC has zero impact on the design or does longer intervals exacerbate the problem? This is what the entire discussion is about. I did not see where that is mentioned but I’m sure you will be able to point that out to all of us.

It was more to discredit the man in the video then to prove/disprove the OCI debate, but given that the early years of the TSB still had 5k OCI, I would say OCI has nothing to do with it, unless you have some evidence to the contrary. For someone so against anecdotal evidence I would think you would welcome this new tangible data on the subject.

Well, I'll give you the TSB part. My GF has an Equinox with the ecotec 4cyl. It has a voracious appetite for oil with just over 100k miles and it's not the PCV issue. Junk.

Ya most those economy style forced induction motors have problems. Think the only people with a good one are the subarus but even they have issues.
