I’m simply admitting that I defer to the Ahmed, the Car Care Nut and Petr from Toyota Maintenance, who have much more experience than I, than to dream up my own opinion.

I will take some comfort in knowing that the V6s are unlikely to develop this issue. I know you are a tech.

Sure thing dude, you shoot down anything like anecdotal evidence and get your data from "checks notes" YouTube personalities? man. No I really get it, I do, they are the professionals so they must know what they are doing, but an important thing to keep in mind is that these people see the worst of the WORST .0001% of the vehicles on the road, and base there opinions on that. They don't see the other 99.999% of vehicles that never have an issue.

I would not characterize the vehicle in the video as the worst of the worst. He specifically mentioned it was impeccably maintained so that viewpoint of yours does not apply here- sorry. He wouldn’t be a YouTube personality if he wasn’t first a master technician who people trusted. He seems like a very honorable man.

They have other issues, there are cylinder heads and valve seals failing, but very rare. Like 1 in 10,000

That's very anecdotal, do you have any evidence to support this? Also being a master technician is not required for being a successful youtuber. I would not call a vehicle maintained with the cheapest oil available "impeccably maintained" I would call that very poorly maintained.

So I guess if you KNOW that Mobil 1 is being used for example you would be ok for 10K, however he kind of disputes that also. I would kind of believe Mobil 1 in that it's good for 10K. Some Mobil 1's are 15K.
If the dealer does it then I guess 5K is in order.

Well, for one, when is 40 years of experience considered anecdotal? Petr and Ahmed assuredly have that combined.

    anecdotal
    adjective
    1. (of an account) not necessarily true or reliable, because based on personal accounts rather than facts or research.
One or several peoples accounts, not backed up by statistical data is the literal definition of anecdotal.

Why can't some people just accept that others will change their oil as they see fit? Rather than some people from all sides getting nasty about it?

After all. We're talking about oil change intervals here. Oil changes that people are doing, or having done, on thier own vehicles. That they themselves are paying for.
It's probably safe to say that the vast majority here have owned multiple vehicles, and have already decided on what we each feel is a good OCI.
I have mine, and that's all that is important to me.

Allowing this discussion to get nasty, like they always seem to do, is beyond me.

Do whatever you want. It's your Tacoma :spending:

The oil filter is the internal filtration system paper material...minus the plastic cover which can be replaced with an aluminum cover.

I also have the Fumoto valve which I think I will install after my 20K ToyotaCare MX...my last oil change included in TCM.

My suggestion to those who come on this thread and tell your story about how you maintain your oil changes...please consider how these folks will debate how you (generalized statement) take action on TAKING CARE OF YOUR VEHICLE.

How each individual takes action on performing their scheduled maintenance is their own business. Avoid the negativity about HOW YOU GO ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS.

    I'm off the soapbox now...lol!

I was talking generically about oil filters, not specifically of the 3rd gen Tacomas. Since it is a cartridge style, it would be easy to compare an aftermarket filter to that of a Toyota or higher end aftermarket filter. If the media has less folds, it has shorter media and has less surface area for filtration/retention. I wouldn't want to use it for extended services.

I figured...but not all oil filters are the same.

This is the first oil filter I've experienced that is not all-in-one.

When in doubt, stick with the manufactures filter cartridge.

I used the basic mobil 1 5w-30 in my 4.7 tundra for years, changing it once per year every 15k miles or so. That oil still looked like it'd be fine to run in my lawn tractor. That same 2001 truck is still running great today with over 300k miles on it. As this bs about replacing your oil for many at 5k is crazy....well i guess if all you use is super tech oil, than thats different.
