I think I've posted this before in some way/shape/form, but not a dedicated thread.

What octane fuel do you run in your 1GR-FE?

Mine seems a little grumpy at 87. Trying 89 this week.

    Thanks for any replies.

Mine knocks really bad on 87, and I get around 12 MPG. It's happier on 89, but it still knocks pretty bad, and I get around 17 MPG. On 93, I get no knock and I've seen 24 MPG on a tank. On ethanol free 91, I get no knock, and around 21 MPG.

Weird thing is that on 87, it knocks worse the colder it gets. 35° and it's just knocking away. 95° and it's knocking, but not quite as bad.

So, I pretty much just run 93.

And no, I don't have a supercharger. It's totally stock.

With the fantastic fuel prices here in CA (and this country in general)... My 2013 TRD OR gets nothing but the absolute best that is the shit CA E10 87.

Never an issue. 19mpg unloaded cruising at 75, grabbed 12.5 mpg towing a decent load in 100+*F heats the other weekend without issue so can't complain

Nice. Also which Costco? The one I go to is at $3.65 and I pass by 2 on my way to work with another one near my home in Houston.

I wonder what causes this particular engine to have a tendency to knock.

87 with no problems. Occasionally, I'll run 93 just to be nice to my truck.

    89 ethanol free.

I can tell the difference in power and smoothness running ethanol vs non ethanol gas.

I get around 1.5mpg more with ethanol free.

I'd run 87 if the stations had it in E-Free but all the E-Free pumps I've seen are 89.

I dont think in the history of a 1GR v6 in the 2nd gen tacoma you could get 24mph unless you were going downhill with a tailwind.... ESPECIALLY considering you have the MT. a 12MPG spread from 87-93 octane.... lawls BS.

the engine was designed to run on 87. If you have knocking and other issues you may need to do some work and get to the bottom of it.

The same shit everyone else has.
87 just like the owner’s manual recommends.

my 3rd gen runs better on higher octane, especially when its hot out. definitely unusual that you get more knocking when it's cold

87 octane on my 2015, and zero issues after 60k miles, typically getting between 17-19 mpg. In the mountains, of course, the octane will be more like 85 (R+M)/2.

On a slightly related topic, I ran an experiment in New Mexico a year and a half ago running ethanol-free fuel for a thousand miles as part of a 3-4k mile trip, taking very good data all the way, and saw no effect on mileage or runnability from ethanol-free.

Really? Knocking so hard that it's down to like half power, and you're calling BS on a 12MPG spread?

I live at higher altitude. In town, premium gets me like 18, on trips up in the mountains, on a cool day, I can get 24. Same type of trips, I could get 34MPG in my old WRX, which would only get 23-25 on the freeway, or 18-20 in town.

Yep. I'm not that worried about it, I'm hoping to do an engine swap sooner or later. My guess is it's an issue with an injector or three, maybe fuel pump. It runs fine on premium, even when it was 112°F. It would knock stupid bad if I was running regular in it.

I've done the 'easy' things, such as cleaning the MAF (it's the exact same part as my WRX, I have a spare MAF from my WRX in my box, should throw it out), new air filter, cleaned the throttle body, new spark plugs, etc., but nothing really makes any difference, so I'm going to assume it's an issue with fueling. Gonna have the dealer I bought it from do some service, and ask them to check for fueling issues that would cause a lack of power on regular. I don't floor it very often, but I do maybe once a week through second gear, just to keep the carbon and what-not away. Gonna have the ball joints inspected, ujoints replaced (making noise), diffs serviced, transfer case serviced, and transmission fluid serviced, brake fluid flush, new coolant, and have the engine oil leak diagnosed.

I did an oil change 80 miles ago, and there were no sparklies or anything in it, so I'm assuming this isn't a bottom/top end issue.
