Tacoma Vs. Rivian

While I have no doubt the Rivian outperforms most ICE powered trucks it is, for me, UGLY, just darn ugly! Also isn't Rivian going out of business practically before it ever really got off the ground really. No way could I ever consider owning one of these, just couldn't do it! To all those that like it, go for it, I certainly won't be jumping in.

I am late to the party here but the EV world is starting to come back to reality it seems. Couple of very interesting articles & peer reviewed papers.

Maybe Chevy is doing a mass recall because Chevy just fucken sucks, EV or not...

 

A quick scan of the peer reviewed article (and reading the conclusion) doesn't show any shocking information. No one here (I don't think) has said that EVs are the be all and end all and that they are perfect in their current form. I'm certainly not "unhappy" from what I've read. Of course the vehicles that run on coal power aren't ideal. Not Evey grid is powered by coal. I mentioned it before but my province is 97% renewable electricity with zero coal. Maybe EVs can be the catalyst to end our usage of fossil fuels for electricity. People are quick to go on about how EVs aren't good because they run on coal but don't bat an eye that their whole house runs on it as well.

Your other article that shows that an upstart tech company that builds EVs doesn't make good cars isn't shocking either. It will be interesting to see in the next few years when the big players make more EVs. Technology in it's infancy will have it's issues. You see on forums like this ad nauseum to not buy the first iteration of a new vehicle. That's not ICE or EV specific.

EVs aren't perfect, don't work for everyone, and aren't ideal for everywhere, but that doesn't mean they can't be a step forward.

 

Lay offs will do that. Ford's stock was performing better after Ford announced they are eliminating positions.

I'm sorry did you just cite JD Power as "peer reviewed science"? If we listened to JD Power (a thing nobody has done for probably a decade), you'd go buy a Ranger over a Tacoma.

The NBER report you linked is science but it doesn't talk about anything except the economics and policy which I don't think anyone has debated here. The NBER report concludes something that I imagine will make you upset:

 

Rivian is projected to produce 25K vehicles this year, not exactly a big deal. They have an order for 20K delivery vans for Amazon who happens to have a 20% investment in the company. Just saying they are not exactly lighting it up, they're laying off 100+ employees seems like a lot for a small company. With Ford, Chevy and Tesla all either on the verge of or having already brought to market electric trucks Rivian is in for a rough ride I think. Oh and Ford owns a large stake in Rivian, hmm that is likely to enable Ford to rob their technology like they did to Land Rover and Volvo, speculation but history has proven this to be true.

I think one major recall could put Rivian out of business.
Meanwhile Motortrend thinks their will be a hybrid and an EV Tacoma in 2024.

Toyota had one sitting back in their 'upcoming vehicles' lineup pic.

Like I said earlier, I hope they go with the Crown's turbo4 + water cooled eAWD combo but with a bigger battery for the PHEV.

 

That's a whole lotta hype and potential for the future built in to that stock price.

Compare Ford's valuation with all of their knowledge, brand history, assets, dealer network and global sales (~3.5 million?) compared to upstart Rivian delivering what.. ~7,000 trucks.. it's insane.

 

The stock price at 175 was a lot of hype.

I highly doubt Toyota will have an EV or even hybrid Tacoma by 2024. I would have though we would have heard more as our it by now. They really move at a snails pace updating vehicles.
