You can chose not to double clutch while downshifting. Sure, the syncro will do it's work, but why waste the syncro when you can do it the right and best way.

another situation would be offroading in 4hi and down shifting from 2nd to 1st for more torque if you start to get bogged down. more than once id lose my momentum and wind up having to stop and start over.

all manual transmissions work the same. shifting from 2nd to 1st is no different than shifting 3rd to 2nd mechanically

Well my truck isn't manual either, so I'm not using my truck to compare.

I used to drive my brother's Jeep 4-banger, stock gears on 33s. I was a gut less POS. And all you do is use the clutch in second a little. It won't hurt it if you know what you are doing.

For the situations you mentioned: In the Heep I would either use second and use the clutch (works if you know what you are doing) or stop (The Heep has absolutely no power) and shift into first. But I'm sure your 2.7L 4-banger has way more power than the old/tired 2.4L Heep on 33s with stock gears that are ment for 26" tires.

Ive been driving my truck for 4 years, does all the things described but really who cares? I got used to it after a month. I like knowing that I'm not accidentally going to pop it into first, I also like the fact that my second gear is strong enough to keep me moving and accelerate from 5mph, even a dead stop. The blower pisses me off sometimes but other times it sounds like a supercharger so its whatever.

As stated before, its a truck not a car. It is just something you have to get used to

my father (68 years old) who is a CDL instructor made comments of how clunky my 5spd is. i went to the stealer and test drove an AC 5spd and it was just as clunky.

he taught me how to drive, ive got a cdl. im very familiar with driving non synchroed trannies and my tacoma has an issue. You all can argue all you want there are quite a few 4 banger 5 speeds that have trouble shifting into first. no matter what you guys saying its not always operator error

it seems like everyone chimes in with a solution to the clunky transmission. just do this or just do that when it is an obvious problem...

it doesnt bother me enough to get rid of it. I am just trying to validate that there is an issue. a 2010 should shift smoother is all. i dont think its a reliability issue and i dont mean to come across like im complaining. Im just validating that yes many 4 banger 5 speeds are tougher to shift than they should be.

i am in the same boat as this guy. Its just a small annoyance but it seems like everyone has the "solution" when its not as cut and dry as many people ont this thread make it sound...

I have driven Yoytoda truck many times and it is really hard to get into first no mater if you are stopped or need to go into first going up a steep hill. It feels like you are jamming it in to first.

I have a 2010 with the five speed. It's a little clunky, but far from the worst I've driven. I don't have any of the issues people are talking about -- I can shift into first while it is moving, it goes into reverse fine, etc, just like every other stick shift I have owned. So I don't know if Toyota is making some dud five-speeds, or there are some owners who are expecting it to drive like a sports car instead of a clunky truck. But for what it's worth (not much), mine drives fine and so have the two or three other Tacoma five speeds I've driven in the past few years.
