made quick friends with the guy next site up-river give or take a hundred yards
i was planning a next day drive up to the higher elevations & he offered to drive
his military surplus diesel 6X6 rig is a beast…49” tires
we stopped for a beer at a small lake resort & parked next to a fake hummer…the hood was 6” higher than the hummer’s roof…

While wandering around the Eastern Sierra neighborhood, I bumped into a 2x4 Chevy, stuck, square across the road, front wheels in a rain rut. I could not get in front of him, in back of him, or around him. I ended up dragging his rear end around, sideways, so he could finally back out of there.

    Instant trail karma. Nice job.

It's hard for me to remember all the people I've tugged out of bad spots the last 10 years. One of the memorable ones was a guy and his wife in a super sweet Can Am Maverick. I was headed up Silver and saw them coming up on me. Which is impressive because I run Silver pretty fast. I pulled over to let them by and we chatted for about 5 minutes.

I make it to the top of Silver and there's that Can Am laying on it's side. First question was "Are you both OK?" He and she assured me that they where fine and the 5 point harness did it's job. Then it was his turn to ask a question: "Any chance you can pull me back onto the wheels?". I did. We let it sit for 10 minutes and it fired right up.

Turns out when he got to the top he went to do a few donuts in the huge overlook on the left. One of his tires caught a rut and that was all she wrote. lol

I have heard more disaster stories with people doing donuts, anywhere from snow to sand. Just say no to donuts!

Agreed. I said that Can Am was nice and it was. Fully tuned and turbo'd on 33's. If I was behind that wheel I'd probably have done the same thing. lol

There's an IG video that features a truck sliding into a yard and flipping onto the roof...

Thanks. In reality, this was a selfish act -- I wanted to get past him and up the hill.

The dude clearly lacked ground clearance and of course, articulation. Poor chap. Good thing you showed up.

I’m seeing that the weather has been pretty wild between the Owens and Death Valleys and even over into Nevada. Hope everyone who lives there or visiting is doing OK. We just had about 15 minutes of very heavy rain here on the coast. And now it’s 80° again.

It's always a good day when the postman brings you more Sierra gold. Even more so since we relocated from Reno to the Sonoran desert last month. Many thanks to @theesotericone for mentioning this last year :hattip:my wife and I have been hooked since.

For a tiny little town it does have some damn fine coffee. Black Sheep is one of my 3 favorite roasters in the US. Just so happens I live 1.3 miles away from it. lol

Funny story when they first started doing mail order I told some buddies back east about them. They all ordered and kept ordering. Then their friends started ordering. I talked with the owner about 6 months after that and asked how the online stuff was going. He told me he was getting a shit ton of orders from New Jersey. I let him know a free pound or two of coffee was all the thanks I needed. He obliged. lol

Right on. I was stoked that Peter ships out of state especially with being 500 miles away now. New Jersey eh, I grew up in Cherry Hill and spent my youth wheeling, fishing and hunting in the pine barrens.

I have had a coffee or two there. Thanks for letting me know about the online thing! We have a sort of similar dude up this way.

He's the real deal. Even delivers by bicycle.

It's a much bigger landscape out west and that's why I'm here now. Pretty much the same though. Grew up in Morris County and hunted, fished, wheeled and climbed all over northern Jersey, PA, and NY State. Funny thing is I used to think the 4.5 hour drive to Lake Placid was long. Now that's a normal weekend drive out here. lol

I spent a bit of time in the Pine Barrens hunting the Jersey Devil but never did find it. Scared the shit out of ourselves a few times with the stories around the campfire though.

Sweet. Thanks for the heads up. Bookmarked and will order some tomorrow.
