At Gwyn's last week...

 

I have this sweet girl on home trial right now, she's very affectionate but I'm not having much luck yet getting her to eat. Gonna try some canned chicken warmed up with her food next

 

Ah, man... This thread is exactly how I've been feeling about our last guy. He was with us for 15 years, been almost 3 since we had to put him to sleep, and I still get verklempt thinking about him. The best strategy I have to fend off the "man tears" is just remembering that we gave him a great life and he did the same for us.

Also, love your avatar OP! I was hoping the same thing when all this started! I will say it does appear to have created a lot of "mental" zombies...

 

Worst day to own a dog is the last day. Amen. Been there four times.

 

Ah, man! Totally put this thread out my head and then my youngest sis sent me a pic she found a few days ago. This was when he was about 3-4 years old. I think a big part of my issue is that I've always been extremely nostalgic... to the point of "not healthy" rumination on the past. It's kinda funny because my younger brother is the exact opposite... I know a new pup would help but just never seems like the right time.

Gah! What is this liquid coming out of my sight orbs???

 

I'll put up a couple positive memories!

One of my favorites from this time of year was taking him to a nearby Civil War battlefield. If my girls were with me, we'd hike to the top of a pretty big hill and, after enjoying the view, I'd tell them they had a full minute head start to get to the bottom before I'd send Rootbeer after them. Listening to them cackle as they ran down the hill, barely able to keep their legs under them, while Root would be quivering to go after them, would have me rolling! When I said "Go get 'em!", he would take off like a shot and then, about 30-45 seconds later, I'd hear them shrieking and laughing while he danced around them. Beautiful!

Another good one: Same place but just me and Root at dusk or night. He'd love to get a bit ahead of me and belly down in the weeds, waiting for me to walk past. I'd pretend I didn't see him while calling for him. Right after I would pass him, he'd come bounding out of his ambush and we'd play "chase" until one of us couldn't run anymore...

He was a rescue dog, so I do take a lot of solace in the fact that we gave him a pretty good life and he did the same for us!

 

Getting Porter to sit still for a picture is not easy...
