Depends on how they're kept. Garaged EV, or a short run outdoors? No biggie. Outdoor parking, not tied into a shore tie doing preheat, not so much. The R4P will run the ICE at those temps until it can get the battery warmed up.

 

I already have solar and batteries but you’re right, a mobile battery bank that I can drive to a charger and home again would be great too.

 

Tbh solar in the PNW isn't awesome. We're in the worst insolation zone in the country and out of a 100W rated panel, on a rainy winter day I can maybe pull 10w out of it if I'm lucky. All of our 'grid down' events tend to be interconnect related anyway, and fixed relatively quickly.

 

You seem to ignore reality…I’m not crying and refuse to acknowledge your hyperbole. The fact is the current grid does not support current requirements, warning signs of risks go back for a decade so stuff your “status quo” statement because there has been no substantial investment in sustainable infrastructure improvement. Emphasis on “sustainable” and added commentary on forward looking technology investment. Tell me WHEN the status quo will change? BTW you are far from “special”.

 

Please explain in which way? There isn't one grid, it's a series of interconnects of various regional grids. Which components 'can't handle demand'?

 

Eh cuz they arent wrong. I think people are just burned out of all the EV talk, go green, yadd yadda, its all kind of bullshit anyway. We know there will be a shift in EV, we know that charging wont be free. I think what the conclusion really comes down to is it really wont make a difference.

Think about how long it took people to adopt airplanes and how long it took to become mainstream travel, even cars took decades to catch on and these were ground breaking new technologies that changed peoples lives.

EV's are still just cars, unless they can travel through time or hover, they really wont catch on for decades to come. We will all be long dead before EV's become the primary means of transportation

 

They're just cars, but getting some extra performance and half the operating cost on the same vehicle isn't a bad thing. I didn't say a gosh darned thing about 'green'.

Unfortunately the Texas grid as manage by ERCOT is not tied in tightly to the national grid.

 

Yup, ERCOT's an interesting case study, but 'ercot cannot support EVs' does not necessarily mean that increased EV %ages are going to kill the whole grid. You're more likely for the more affluent neighborhoods to overload their substation, than a 'grid collapse' situation. Plus, like i said - 'demand response'. Utilities will literally pay you to charge at certain hours and not other hours. (or run your a/c at certain hours and not others).

 

Eh it's like solar, doesn't exactly have a better ROI.

 

sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. We needed an upgrade to the old TDI Jetta, the R4P fit the bill. I can directly compare hybrid (gas) mode and EV mode on it. Hybrid mode is twice the running costs. Cost between the two vehicles would be exactly the same (10k of rebates really helps) so it's just about running costs on the same vehicle. Every time I plug in, I'm saving money.

 

So what do you mean by operating costs? I assume you are just comparing pump price?

 

Considering my reference frame is a Toyota Rav4 prime that can run on both ICE(hybrid) and EV modes, I'm purely talking about the cost per mile difference between running on gasoline (in hybrid) vs running on electricity.

Everything else is a flat cost (loan payback, insurance, etc).

 

I see, well I do think the real long term is plug-in hybrids. I like the idea of what Formula 1 is doing with their powerplants, turbo-hybrid with MGU-K/H. You get the best of everything really and they are moving to sustainable fuels sources. They will never go full EV since they already have a seperate formula E division but I can see that being the long game for sure. I think ICE combined with other technologies is what we should focus more on as opposed to pure EV.

I surely hope so. I know that they're the future, but not my future. My 1st Gen will last me the rest of my days unless some "Moron" not paying attention wrecks my truck.

 

Probably not too well but at least the electricity will still be flowing to top of the charge. TX will be frozen in a blackout.

 

An EV would be fine for me and my wife. We're retired and rarely drive more than a hundred miles a month. I would like to give the car makers a little more time to put the best technology out on the showroom floor. Im not concerned with 0 to 60 times, just want the most reliable product possible.
