It is very relevant. A 4wd is maybe 3k more to purchase. I guarantee the difference will be greater than 3k you will get in resale if you have a 4wd vs 2wd when the time comes to sell. Most people won't even consider a used or new 2wd

The other issue is that I’d prefer a 4x2, and most trucks, even in this area, are 4x4.

LOL! Welcome to the club. NC has clean ones. Just fly down look at 4-5 and drive back. You will save yourself from a perpetual migraine.

dude is in NE area with snow
The Tacoma is a 4x4 gas hog. Makes no sense to remove the propshaft to drive what will still be an off road gas hog but less capable

My only maintenance on 4x4 in 10+ years has been a couple bottles of gear oil
