I’m in the 5K camp. However, how is this “evidence”? To be more specific, how can we directly connect the outcome to the oil change interval? Correlation does not equal causality — are there other reasonable explanations? For example, quality escapes in manufacturing? I only watched the first half and didn’t hear an explanation of cause and effect for the particular issue found in two of the cylinders.

On the other hand I found his statement about the OCI only intending to get the engine through the warranty period to be interesting. And cynical. And not necessarily unreasonably so.

3-5k for me. Seen wayy to many issues with 10k intervals. Nothing but a sales ploy.

If you can't go by the manufactures owners manual that made the engine who can you believe? After all most on tw are way smarter than these lowly toyota engineers.

Could it be, as mentioned previously, that marketing plays a role in the maintenance plan? Toyota’s first priority may be to mitigate their exposure to warranty items and it is likely they feel comfortable about the 10k OCI for the limited 60,000 mile timeframe. They likely balance warranty concerns to ownership cost and also likely don’t land on what’s best for the buyer. Decisions are always made to serve the corporation and their shareholders.

This interval plays well with consumers who will evaluate the “upkeep” cost across different make and models and they will assume, just as you have, that this is the optimal opinion decided solely by the engineers.

Possibly Toyota engineers suggested a 5k interval is preferable but marketing and senior management weigh-in and Trump their opinion in order to appeal more favorably to the buyer.

If you don’t consider this a possibility “you” could be doing yourself a disservice.

I think your overthinking this. Toyota isn't quite like gm or ford, at least i hope not yet, besides i've only used mobil 1 the last 20 years doing the changes myself. They've proved to have an excellent track record with extended oil changes. Believe me, going on past experience using their oil, i'm not the least bit worried. I'd be way more concerned if i went to these quick change oil outlets wondering what their special of the month was i might be getting.

Way too many could, may, possibly and likely's in that post to consider it evidence of anything. After all that, it could be that 10k is perfectly fine.

It's worked for me for roughly a million miles and all the oil test people say their oil test out ok after 10K. So far, no one has posted any certifiable evidence other than a guy who makes his money on youtube with clicks that there is a problem.

All I wish to see is some form of proof that it causes problems.

The only actually useful data would be a study of hundreds if not thousands of vehicles, comparing 5K vice 10K and then some type of engine tear down and inspection at x miles.

Anything else is purely anecdotal or super small sample size.

What I’m really, really sick of hearing, for oil changes and everything else, is I’ve done ____ and had no problems. The most meaningless statement ever.

They could try to study oil consumption bust most people don’t even check their oil anymore in between changes. Honestly a lot of people should just be driving EVs at this point since many don’t seem to wanna bother maintaining ICE cars anymore. Not anyone on this thread, but just in the general population Im saying like that one vid where she didn’t change the oil in the Subaru for 23k miles.

Well the OP asked, has anyone had problems with 10K changes. the people who actually do 10k changes said no, the people who dont called everybody who does 10K lazy, cheap or fools. LOL

For the record, I am not soliciting approval for 10k changes nor even asking advice.

if you really want to know send oil samples to Blackstone labs and have them analyze the oil. https://www.blackstone-labs.com/ do a couple etsts and they will give you a suggestion on how long you can go under similar conditions once you have an established baseline.

I'm not saying 10k oil changes should be for everyone, maybe some, or even myself are getting the wrong idea. This for normal everyday use on a combination of some city, and mostly highway driving. If your in another bracket that qualifies for severe use, thats why the owners manual states 5k instead.

Also for the record I don’t think your cheap a fool or lazy. You just have a different opinion about what’s best for your engine. No big deal.
